It depends entirely on the agency.
Some departments regulate what their officdrs can and cannot carry. Some even issue a specific make/model gun.
A 44 Magnum (what Dirty Harry used) is not a practical handgun for most patrol officers. Without going into a lesson on handguns, understand that different guns (more accurately different bullet types) have different characteristics. A Police officer wants a balance of stopping power and usability. Most opt for something between 9mm and 45 cal. I carried a .357 Magnum.
Anyway, to answer your question. Yes, if the agency they worked for allowed it, but I doubt many would. |

I don't know of any police department or state that allows a .44 magnum to be used as standard arms.
I suppose there are some individuals that may try to use them, but it could wind up getting them in trouble.
The largest caliber I'm aware of is the .40 for standard use, although there are some that carry the .357 magnum, usually loaded with standard .38 ammo until more firepower is needed.
Personally, I think all officers should be armed with whatever necessary to combat what's on the street. |

Its up to each individual deprtments regulations and rules. It would not make sense because its a revovler and only holds six rounds. when you can get a 45 cal. semi-autimatic that can hold13 or 14 rounds. |

If the agency allowed the officer to use it as a back up weapon, yes. Most agencies provide, or need to approve a duty weapon. But they are less stringent with back up weapons, say in the vehicle, or on the ankle, or under the armpit. Harry's gun would only work as a back up pistol in the patrol vehicle. |
