May the police lawfully assault you?
No.
Do the police continue to commit unlawful assault?
Unfortunately, yes.
From "agents provocateurs" at large public gatherings who perpetrate violence in plain clothes and thus giving the police the excuse to resort to force, to gruesome manifestations of the establishment's enduring institutionlised racism, to dispersing non-violent groups with baton charges, it happens. All you can do then is take it to the Police Complaints folk and hope they come out on your side. |

Well back in the old days, they used to cuff our ears if we were doing mischief, but then it was a different time, we would expect it as long as he didn't take us home and tell our dad. Mind we didn't go around stabbing people or anything like that, we only did things like pinch apples, or trespass. But we had a lot of respect those days, it was a different world. |

No they can't slap you for no reason but why do you fear it? It's not like coppers are randomly running up to people in the street & slapping them?! |

If you do not break the law it is extremely unlikely you will ever have any problem with the UK Police. This is not China and a UK Police Officer cannot get away with behaving aggressively everytime he/she feels like it. I am guessing but I doubt if any Police Officer wants 20 separate complaints against them.
However, if you break the law, very occasionally, if they think they can get away with it some Police Officers will behave aggressively towards you. But it isn't likely to be life threatening and nothing to 'fear'.
When I was about 21 yrs old a custody sergeant choked me to near unconsciousness because I was drunk and would not be quiet in his Police Station. I must admit that if I knew who he was today I would feel like beating the crap out of him. But I can't judge all Police Officers based on the minority (or even a whole officer by one inappropriate action).
(I do wonder if our Police will go further downhill with the introduction of immigrant recruits esp. from Eastern Europe where they have a different perspective.) |

why would this worry you? you're either acting up or not and getting in the face of an officer of the law may just get you slapped and deservedly so, even though it is not presumably legal. sounds like you're looking for an excuse to sue someone. |

A slightly bizarre question to ask don't you think. What have you to fear from the police? What is your reasoning behind such a question?
The police cannot slap you because that would constitute an assault unless they were acting in self defence against you.
Like my first paragraph said... a bizarre question!!!! |

Of course not. Why are you so frightened of the Police?. They would only restrain you if you were resisting arrest. The Piolice will help you if you are in trouble. |

If you go around asking questions like that, probably regular people are going to end up slapping you. |
