Yes, they stil have power of arrest. However, they spend most of their time doing administrative work. A small town Chief may get out and make arrests but the bigger your agency the rare it is going to happen.
It is impossible to say how long it could take to become Chief. |

Yes, he is still an active police officer.
When I was a kid, the deacon at our church was our local police Chief and I remember him nabbing a car thief. |

They sure can, they just don't do it much.
A long time I guess, also depends on the size of the department, what your degree/ experience is, and all that.. the only guys I've ever come in contact with were at least 40s. |

mainly they just make goals for the department and make sure everything is going correctly. they are like the ceo of a company. as long as they have gone through the police academy for that city sometime in their career then yes they can arrest people, but very very rarely do.
it depends on your qualifications and where you are. in new york city it could take you 30 years when in a smaller city it could take 10 or 30 like nyc, it really just depends on the mayor since he/she is the one who will elect you. |
