The degree is not criminal justice or political science...but can simply having a four-year college degree increase my starting salary if I become a police officer, deputy sheriff, etc? Thanks!

That depends on the department. Most offer the same salary regardless of education.
My department offers an annual bonus of $250 for an associates degree, and $500 for a bachelors. It is paid in a lump sum the first pay period in December.
Other departments are more substantial. Madison, WI offers 9% extra for an associates, 18% for a bachelors, and 22% for a masters. However, starting pay is the same, you have to wait 42 months for the increase.

Your degree will give you a better chance of being hired. I don't know of any police depts. that will start you off with more pay because of a degree.
Police salaries are based on a tiered system. You start out with the same base salary as everyone else, then it increases every year until you reach top pay. It can take anywhere from 5 to 7 yrs. to make top pay. It would depend on the dept.
Of course an officer senior to you will make more money at top pay because of longevity and yearly salary increases.
Your degree could come in handy when promotions come along though. |

Like Trooper3 says, a lot of departments will give you a bonus for advanced degrees, usually 2.5-3% for Associates and 3-5% for Bachelors. Having a degree will help you get hired by a department; it demonstrates the ability to achieve your goals, determination and intelligence. Having a degree really helps you, or should I say hurts you if don't have one, when you are ready to promote. Most departments won't promote to sergeant without a bachelors and won't promote to lieutenant or captain without a masters or higher. |

Yes depending on where you are applying will also depend on the amount you get. Any four year college degree will start you out higher than someone who does not have one. |
