i have a shotgun that is mine(im 16) that my parents bought me a long time ago. can i have it in the car? Also can i shoot it legaly(in a legal spot of course)? Can I defend myself with it(like in my house)?

Every state has different laws so I would look online for details but yes, you can own a gun or have somebody give you a gun as a gift and have it under your name. No, you can't have it in the car. Yes, you can take it to the range or go hunting as long as you have a responsible adult or guardian present. Yes you can do whatever you want in your house. |

Technically the shotgun or any gun should be registered to your parents, even if you are the owner. A minor can't register a gun.
No you can't have it on the car, you are a minor and the gun or shotgun is not registered to you. Your parent needs to be present in the car; the shotgun or gun should be in the trunk, unloaded. You and your parents are only allowed to transport the shotgun from home to the shooting range; you can't go around on a road trip.
For shooting range, again your parents need to be present.
At home you are allowed to defend yourself; but try not to shoot your parents by accident (yes it has happened); also self defense law is very strict, for example if the guy is giving up or running away you can't kill him, other restrictions might apply.
WARNIG: every jurisdiction have diferent rules so it's your and your parents responsability to make sure you are not breaking local laws and regulations. |

Laws are different in every State. In mine, you couldn't have it in the car, you couldn't shoot it in the field without a parent present. You could use it to defend yourself in the house, but the laws on deadly force are tricky, too.
Contact your local police department or your State police, or even a local gun club, who should be able to tell you what the law is. |

Yes. Many states require youths to take a training course before you go hunting.
