if someone told me thier friend commited a serious crime and I go to the cops will I be kept conifidentail because i didnt see the crime commited or will i my life be in danger

You can totally request to remain anonymous. Like others have said, it is a tip. The problem with remaining anonymous is that you can't give your friend's name (who obviously has more info than you) because then your friend will know who told the cops. But that is a safety issue. If your friend is truly a friend that you want to keep, then you need to decide what you are going to do about the trust factor in your relationship.
I am not saying that you should not go to the cops, because you definitely should, I am just saying to be careful with what you say so you don't ruin the relationship with your friend. Just be as honest and open with the police as you possibly can. |

If you really feel that you have important information leading to a crime being solved it is your civic duty to report it to the police. They will determine whether or not it is information that they can use. If you need protection, they help you with that , too. |

Please go to the police and tell them what you know and that your name must be confidential. They will take it from there. Police need tips from us to help them solve the many crimes that they have to deal with. You are a good citizen to do this. |

You can give an anonymous tip. Your testimony is hear-say and would not be admissible in court. |

Of course---call the local TIP line or see if a city NEAR where you live has one----often there is.
Or you can WRITE in and submit it. It is vital for people to get closure on these things and it will make you FEEL better. It is a good thing that you are doing and there is no way that your life will be in danger if you ask the police to help you if you fear for this and tell them that this might be a concern and it is valid.
Also there is something called Hearsay and it will help seal you and remove you from a step so that you might be protected one more layer, too.

The police will keep evidence in confidence if necessary, as here. If you know anything the police don't know but should know, by all means tell them. The perp you get off the street may hav had you as the next target! |

If you feel it's important to give information on this crime, then go to the police station and ask if you can give a confidential report. If you are afraid to do that then call the cop station from a pay phone and say you have information about a crime but you can't reveal your identity.
Make sure you say in either case, if you decide to give the information, that you don't want for your identity to be revealed. There may come a point that you are asked if you will be a witness in a trial-- in that case you may want to seek advice from a lawyer. |
