Hypothetical scenario: A person owns a gun and keeps it in his house or his car. The gun for whatever reason goes off by accident and hits someone. Could a person be sent to prison if he reported it?

There is no such thing as an accidental discharge. Just like there is no such thing as a car (accident) as all accidents are preventable as would be the discharge of any gun.
People shoot people guns don't shoot people. |

If the person holding the weapon had an accidental discharge then they are to blame unless the weapon was proven to be defective.
An accidental discharge is normally caused by poor weapon handling drills although I have seen defective rifles going off when it was not intended (Usually a combination of a faulty extractor and failing to check the chamber is clear when unloading and firing off the action) |

yes ,it is against the law to keep a loaded firearm unattended in the house or car,also as already stated firearms never just fire on their own, someone has to pull the trigger,after undoing the safety catch. so it would not be classed as an accident in the eyes of the law and the courts.

Yes. People do go to jail for accidents and especially in England.
BUT there is no law of corporate manslaughter as far as I know. So big businessmen are exempt.

It depends really on the area they live, but if they didn't report it, the police would definitely find out, and then that person would go to jail. I doubt that if it really was an accident then no this hypothetical person would not go to jail, as long as it was clear they reported it, and it was an accident. |

It would depend on the situation, but they would not be prosecuted if they had a legal right to possess the gun, if there was a good reason for the gun to have been kept where it was and if they had taken reasonable precautions to make sure that it was safe.
If any of these things were not true then the person would probably be found guilty, although nowadays they probably would not receive an actual jail term unless they were grossly negligent or had done something else illegal to lead to the situation(like if the gun was not legal in the first place). |
