Can a police officer give me one good reason why they opposed dash cameras in their cars?

All the answers are good. The cops that have cameras love them.. But I recall before we got cameras there was a concern about having any privacy to have a conversation with other officers while not in contact with the public, ie will the cameras be recording for the entire shift? Turns out it was a non issue as they are only turned on when activated by turning on the overheads, or manually when coming in contact with a citizen.

I can tell you they are left on by mistake after a call, and I have heard more than my share of someone singing along with the radio when reviewing tapes,,, Sweet Caroline as sung by a 30 yr cigar smoking veteran isnt all that pleasant...

Yeah, I'm a fan of the dash cam as well.

One reason officers don't like them though is because they only tell one part of the story.
For example: A local news station gets the dash cam footage of an incident where an unarmed man was shot in the back 20+ times as he ran from cops.

When you look at other camera footage (which they never showed) the man had taken a gun out of his pocket and pointed it at the officers to his left.

I just want to be clear that I realize it's the media's fault for skewing that to their advantage.
But sometimes the camera doesn't tell the whole truth.

Your wrong, we want dash cams, because we are tired of being falsely accused, and called liars in court by lawyers defending drunks! You are very wrong, no one I know has a problem with the camera, it has saved many a life and career! Cops do not want the lo-jack system on their cars, on nights when there is nothing going on, cops tend to migrate towards their favorite 24 hr location, especially night shift officers! I as a off-duty cop do not like seeing 9 police cars parked in front of a restaurant, it looks bad, and t intimidates people!

When you see something on camera versus being in that particular situation it is hard for the general public to understand what's really happening. I love the fact that I have one and will not jump in a patrol car unless one is working. Civilians love to make up excuses and lie's and my camera allows me to show the courts or my superiors why I pulled someone over or how they gave me 4 different names while I investigated them.

There is NO valid reason to oppose a camera in Police vehicles..........having a video camera on and recording your driving activities is legal everywhere in the USA. I purchased the PomCam from windshieldwitness.com and it is the perfect solution. It was under $100 for the complete system. Mine has been on continuously for over 6 months and I've had no problems with it. As a matter of fact the owner of the cab company I drive for saw mine and bought them for all 38 cabs.
