Can a stranger visit an inmate in prison? What about jail?

Can a stranger visit a convicted murderer in jail, what about prison? TIA

A total stranger? That would be rare.

You need to check the rules for the institution where the inmate is housed. Often, the inmate will have a visitation list of people he is willing to see. Write the inmate and asked to be put on the list. If you are, you will probably be allowed to see the person. Some institutions limit the total number of people on each inmate's list, so understand that you may be asking him to forego seeing his grandmother in exchange for seeing you.

The one time I visted a convicted murder (she's on death row), she was not at the prison where she is usually housed. She was at the county jail where her trial took place, where she was temporarily housed while her case was appealed. I was able to see her because her mother (whom I had been in contact with) asked her to place me on her visitation list. It was the first and only time I've ever met her, and it was a fascinating experience that I do not regret. I hope her appeals are eventually successful as she was convicted under very dubious proceedings.
