the police are simply in place to;
firstly, ensure the positions of the alleged "social elites". what pandemonium there would be if the working classes had control of the country (this is what the "elites" think by the way)?
and secondly, to ensure law and order amongst the said working classes. Keeping them down even further. With the odd toff being dealt with for a bit fraud every so often. |

If we had no police, there would be no order. If we had no order there would be Chaos. Just imagine driving down the street and somebody hits your car and drives away, what would you do? Who would you call? Your home gets broken into and the intruder takes your family hostage. There are no police to come to your aid how long would he keep you? For as much as people do not appreciate the police the minute you need them you will give them a call. |

The Metropolitan Police actually have a really good summary of their history on their website. It goes into the history of why we have police. |

There here to serve and protect us all. If we had no police than we'd have no order in out lifes. We would do anything. Even though we have some fools who think the laws don't apply to them in the end they see the cops and the judges have the last word. |

A simple quote "policing is done with the public, not to the public" |

The police are the first line of defense for our civil liberties. All of you who hide behind your nicknames and smile when facing the police but criticize and mock them when you are hiding have the right to say what you want (even to their faces) because they are out their preserving peace and protecting our way of life. They realize that most people don't have the stomach to do what it takes to intercede in conflicts, crimes and emergencies; but, they do it knowing that for the most part they are not appreciated. As the old saying goes: For those who fight for it, freedom has a taste that the protected will never know. Go ahead and say what you will and then (make sure you do it in secret) thank the police and military that preserve that right for you. |

I'll answer that question with a question.
Is the Police Force a force, or is the Police Service a service?
The official definition (part of) of a police officers role is "The preservation of life and property." |

Basically to look after your safety when in a public place and this they managed until the law breaker became mobile.
Today and due to the high crime rate, which in itself is the product of under manning, the police are left to mop up after the event.
We don't know how many illegals we have here and they are all law breakers just by being here.
Perhaps in your time it may get better but until breaking the law becomes a social crime I guess that will be some time. |

Their very existence deters crime much like you wouldn't pass a note if the teacher were standing near-by. My father, who was a police officer for 26 years, says that the police's job is to help people, fighting crime is second. |
