say i see a cop sitting in a parking lot with his radar gun. is it illegal for me to go like a tenth of a mile down the road and hold a sign that says "cop ahead"

Nothing illegal about that.....
Just make sure you're not trespassing , blocking traffic, creating a nuisance for which you could be cited, etc...

If you're parked at the side of the road, it is probably illegal.
If you walk there, and aren't (as Fred said) trespassing , blocking traffic, creating a nuisance, etc. you'll probably be fine.
Although if I was the cop, I'd move my cruiser and sit right beside you....as I'm sure word would spread quickly about your bright idea.
Honest question:
Why help people break the law when it's only going to put you, your family, your friends, and other (possibly) innocent motorists at risk? |

That is probably okay, but flashing your head lights to warn another car is illegal in most states. |

In most cases it isn't illegal.
However, you might consider whether or not you really want to condone speeding in that area. Wouldn't you feel stupid if the officers gave up trying to enforce the speed limit due to your actions, and some pedestrian or innocent motorist was subsequently killed because of a speeder? |

I do that all the time, I keep a sign in my car for that purpose. Or else I sit ahead of them and flash my lights if its dark enough. Although the ambiguous phrase "obstruction of justice" has occurred to me. |

Nothing illegal at all. Of coarse that does not mean that the officer will not harass, beat, shoot, make up something to ticket, or arrest you for. |
