Yes, in our department, we keep uniforms at home, and we also have "take home" patrol cars. We report for briefing at the start of our shift, then when the shift is over, return home again. All of our equipment is kept in our homes. We do have a locker room, but most officers just come from home dressed and ready to go. (160 officers) |

Here in Canada, a Police officer, when off duty, does not travel in uniform , even at the end of a shift, to go home. They change out of uniform, at the station, intro their own clothes, to go home.
Why ? They are NOT armed when off duty, and that means that they should not attempt to make an arrest, while off duty. The Police officer puts his issued weapon in his own gun locker, at the station, at the end of his duty shift.
The result? When Canadian citizens see a Police officer, in uniform, they know that he is properly armed and on duty.

Ofcourse we can. Most of us can also enforce the law while not in uniform when off duty as long as we tell you who we are and show our credentials. I don't know why people think the uniform has something to do with the oath we swore and our ability to be sworn only while wearing a polyester unifomr and cheap metal badge. The uniform is merely a symbol to identify us as well as a marked cruiser, but it has nothing to do with being a sworn officer. |

yes because it is a job! do you go home in your uniform? i think most people that wear uniforms to work can wear them home so they can go back to work the next day! |

yes, however, they are not permitted to perform vehicle stops in their personal vehicle. if a take home vehicle is provided, with most agencies officers are not marked out as being off duty until they arrive at their residence. |

I don't think they have any rules to stop them from doing so. However I imagine in rougher areas they're advised not too as it could be putting them in danger, but certainly I've seen lone officers in uniform obviously not working. |

They used to, but I believe the IRA campaign of the 70's put a stop to the practice. |
