The law enforcement agencies in the US are essentially....

Municipal Police ~ Work in the city jurisdiction.

County Police ~ Work in the cities and entire county.

State Police ~ Work throughout the entire state.

Wherever the officer works is where he/she maintains powers of arrest within their jurisdiction.

Federal law enforcement....

FBI, DEA, US Marshals, Treasury Department, US Customs, etc. These agencies have jurisdiction throughout the US.
