Geez,
Assaulting a Police Officer is crime so yes you can get locked up. If you can't figure out why you are being arrested after hitting an Officer then they should probably check you for drugs too. |

You shouldn't have hit them back; you'd have a much stronger leg to stand on. They have the right to use force in an unruly crowd.
Out of curiosity - what were you demonstrating against?? |

Dave...

yes, they can... you do not have the right to retaliate in any way, shape, or form. It's the power we gave them... enjoy it. Same goes for their K9 (canine) units... can't hit their dogs either, even if they're ripping you limb from limb. |

And #1 on the list of things that will get you in trouble with the police is:
Hitting the police. |

Yes.
But next time, you should probably include the first part of this story....and try not to lie/mislead us.
That way we know what really happened, and why you got what you got. |

Yes they can. It is against the law for someone to hit a police. Unless by accident. |

Well first thing is Police will NOT just hit you. IF and this is IF they hit you it is done in a defense type mode. But the easy answer to your question is YES |

Yes, but don't worry about the arrest. See what they charge you with. Hitting you was unreasonable and hitting the officer back was self defence. But to be honest if you were demonstrating with the rest of the left wing tree hugging loonies then you would expect trouble. You should have stopped in and written a complaint instead. |

Why did the officer hit you? He must caution you at the point of arrest or as soon as piratically possible. He/she will also ask prior to questioning if you want a solicitor present all this is taped and in many cases is on CCTV. |

Yes. This is a common practice with the Met.
They push a drunk around, he raises a hand to protect himself and Bingo! they cart him off. This is a danger- free way of finishing a shift early. |

Kind of, they can charge you for assault on an officer of the law or resisting arrest. You don't have to go to the station with them unless they are actually making a formal arrest. Though to be fair my guess is you were probably really drunk?? :) so they could take in for being disorderly. |
