They can subpoena the bank and get that information from them, yes. |
|

kitty
|

So dont tell them. |
|

if they were investigating a crime and found a bank account number..yes they would go to that bank and access that information. |
|

annalou
 |

Here in Canada, we would have to obtain a warrant to be executed at the bank to obtain the information, but we could get it. |

If they need to yes!! |

Yes the bank has a lot of information of you. |

Yes they can, all US banks are required to keep accurate record and cooperate with law enforcement agencies with a warrant..
That's how IRS and FBI catch all those guys that do frauds or tax evasion. |

The police would need a legitimate reason i.e. a case they were investigating. The Sort code Identifies the bank, the police would then contact the police liaison team for that bank and if the liaison team are satisfied (i.e. they have the correct paperwork and signatures from senior officer), the information would be released.
It is not a case of the police would just know this information, the data protection act prevents this. |

I can identify you using your bank account number.....so uummm.....yes |
|

They can identify you as a person, identify the last known place you performed a transaction, and know all of your personal info (as if they needed your SSN or DOB; they could obtain that with minimal info) HOWEVER they cannot know the current address unless the bank has a current one on file for you. Which, once again, they could figure out your last KNOWN locale through your last transaction. |

Yes, they will just ask the bank. These numbers are unique to you |

They can ID people even if they only have one cell of body tissue with which to extract DNA from. I don't think bank details are much of a stretch for them. |

yup |

oh yes---the police have their ways |
|

 |
Yes they can, but the bank cannot just release the details due to the Data Protection Act. The Police can easily obtain a warrant and then the bank must comply. |

They can get a court to make the bank give them information they have for the owner of a bank account. |

Depends on the situation. Your question is terribly vague. But in most instances, yeah. |

Yep. |

Since you and the bank are the only ones with those numbers, that would identify you. They might have to get some sort of warrant to get the information from bank. |
|

If you have commit ed an offence which is serious enough for the police to spend some time on, they can ask for a magistrate's warrant and obtain your details from the bank. The bank will not issue the details without a warrant. |
|

*golden*delicious*

Yes. What did you do??? |

Joining the long list of people taking a well earned two points :0}
If they have your bank account number they can identify you; if I have your sort code I can identify your bank as can every body else on here.
Your bank account number is your personal identification to your bank.
So if you have bought something dodgey and paid by cheque - you are caught :0} |
|

CAT
|
They can get that information from your bank, I'm sure - IF the crime warranted it. |
