Can this stop me from becoming a police officer?

I am currently 17 and would like to apply to become a police officer when I come of age. I'm still thinking of going to universtity beforehand. The thing is, I get asthma and was wondering how badly it would affect my chances? I don't suffer with it terribly and by reading the UK police guidelines, it states that I may not be eligible...
what do you think? I'm fit and don't tend to get asthma when I run, maybe if I'm ill but it doesn't affect me too badly.
Opinions? I mean, there has to be police with asthma, right?

when you reach occupational health department ( UK ) you are required to do a lung function test, normally after your bleep test, you place your mouth round a large tube, a little bit smaller than a toilet roll and blow out, what you have to take in consideration's, have you had/ suffer from attacks on a regular basis, and can you reach the require standard on the bleep test, firstly though, speak to the recruitment department and go have have a lung function test with your doctor, you sound like you have a mild form of it, so don't worry, remember there are police officers that smoke and they pass it!

Can you run over long sustained periods of time? If so, then no, you don't have to worry, as long as you're able to perform the essential functions of the job then don't sweat it. However, if your asthma is bad enough that you cannot run then, I hate to say it, you will not be admitted into the department. Being able to run to chase down a suspect or to save someones life is essential, if you cannot do it you cannot be a Police Officer. From what you've said it doesn't seem to be the case, but make sure to keep in shape, go for 3-mile runs every day so as to be prepared for the academy. Best of luck with everything.

When you apply you will be put through a physical evaluation and be examined by doctors. It isn't typically something that will keep you out, but not all departments have the same guidelines.

Depends how far you can run! If it's a job chasing someone down, obviously you will not being doing that, there are different parts such has speaking on the radio, driving the cars etc.

UMmmmm I dont know but you could work in the offices and just there not being a police officer so i'm not sure why dont you go to the nearest police station

I had breathing problems and still had a outstanding 23 years of service as a police officer, so if you can run 1&1/2 miles and the rest of the stuff there's no reason why you can't do it. Good luck
