It all depends on departmental policy. I know of some police agencies have officer use his own vehicle as his police vehicle. They provide the equipment (i.e. lights, siren, mobile data computer, etc.). But most other agencies have their own vehicles for the officers to use. Some departments assign the vehicle to each officer for them to take home while other departments do not assign a officer to a vehicle. |

Highly doubtful, because your own car would be independently insured by you. Even if an insurance company would be willing to insure your car the rates would be outrageous due to the risk and liability involved in using your personal car for police work. Also I doubt the department would allow it for there own liability and insurance reasons. And overall it just would not be practical. |

I'm not sure if you 'can' - it's not something I ever considered - but I would wonder why you would want to. Sounds like a major liability to me. |

no, the police dept. or city would become liable. Do you know how often cop cars get banged up? If a drunk ran into it, you would want the dept. to pay for it right? |

Cops can do anything they want. In my town, they fill up their personal vehicles with gas and pay for it with the city's credit cards. No one calls 'em out on it - they can make your life hell if you try to get them to play by the same rules as regular people, that's how an American citizen can find themself shot in the back in my town. |
