Career in Cold Case(Unsolved crimes) unit?

I've been trying to figure out if you can have a career JUST in that. And like what are the qualifications and if you have to be a cop first in order to do that.
If you could link me or tell me the qualifications and such on here it'd be great!
Oh yeah and also if there's a Cold Case Unit in Chicago.

In real life, there is no such thing as a career just as a "Cold Case Detective." There are detectives who are assigned to the Homicide Unit, and/or the Cold Case Squad in the Homicide Unit.
You don't get hired as a detective (Cold case squad or otherwise). You have to go through the testing process and be hired as a police officer. You might work many years in patrol assignments before becoming eligible to be a detective, but you don't get hired as one. If you live in Chicago, you would start by taking the test to become a Chicago police officer.
I am not sure about Chicago, but almost every major city has a "Cold Case" squad in the Homicide Unit. It is usually very small. In many places, all Homicide Detectives are assigned one or two "cold cases" to work when there is a lull in fresh jobs coming in. |

No you cannot go straight into investigating cold cases. Detectives who handle those cases typically have been on the police department for twenty years or more. In fact in my county the cold case squad is made of retired detectives who are paid by contract. |
