I got a ticket for careless driving in the state of Minnesota. I don't have to go to court. All I have to do(that I know of so far) is pay a fine of $185.This is much better than I was prepared for happening. I am now wondering how many points this will take off my license(3-9 I've read) and how much more I will have to pay on my insurance. I've read careless driving is considered a misdemeanor in Minnesota. I've never had anything like this happen before. I have a clean record except for minor driving tickets(1 seat belt,1 snow bird, and one not stopping fully at a stop sign). Will this go on my record? If so how will this infraction/crime possibly affect me throughout life? Thank you in advance for any advice and answers.

I got the same ticket in December and it is 4 points in Florida. But... you can go to driving school and not have any points accessed which is what I recommend. You have to pay the ticket on time
and tell them that you are taking the class. I would look online for a class now and get signed up. It is not cheap but is cheaper than the increase in your insurance.
You didn't commit a crime or get convicted of one. It will not effect your future.

Minnesota doesn't have a point system for licenses -- at least none that I know of, anyway. About the only reference I can find is that your license may be suspended for habitual violation of traffic laws. They don't define "habitual", though.
A ticket for careless driving will probably raise your insurance by about 30 percent for the next three years, depending on your insurance agency's schedule for demerit points. Those are computed by your insurance company, though, not by the state.
And yes, careless driving is considered a misdemeanor in Minnesota. You might want to contact the district court to see if there is some sort of diversion program or a probation before judgment type deal, but that depends on where you live. The offense will go on your driving record. I don't know if it'll go on your criminal record, but I guarantee you that any cop who ever meets you will consider you a criminal and a scumbag and someone who can't contribute productively to society. |
