Cities, Counties are going broke...why not cut more Police to save money?

In my state (like most) crime as declined in almost every category and certainly my local area as well.
When I drive the 6 miles to work everyday I see (5) layers of police driving around...just in my area and that includes at least 2 taking radar to make sure no one goes over 25 mph...thank God!
We have State Police, County Sheriffs, Twp Police, City Police and even a local College force lurking around.
We have all read the countless articles how these near bankrupt institutions are and are responding by writing "We the People" a record number of traffic citation (in the name of safety of course <cough>).
My point, instead of running around "busting" the bad guys (those who go 31 mph in a 25 mph zone)
why not do as the private sector does and lay them off Thessaly saving us who pay all the bills and work in the private sector.
I mean some of the county level "workers" make 80k-100k a year, I would imagine the state cruisers make more if not the same not included on the benefits we are paying for, pension, health insurance and the rest.
Just seems like such a waste of our money

SM, good point but unemployment benifits are better than a full salary. Also, they could find jobs in a less-taxing field in the private sector.

You may think that there's "nothing to do", but trust me, there are hundreds of calls to the police every day and perhaps many more than that in bigger cities.
Trust me, we are busy.
And if you think reducing the amount of police is the answer, just exactly how will you feel when you're having a heart attack? I know, you think that's the Fire Department's job... but the problem is that they might not enter your house without a police escort (and that happens quite often). And suppose the police are 3 minutes later because you reduced the force size. Did you survive?
And if someone is breaking into your house... is that 3 minutes enough for the intruder to find you and kill you?
Drunk drivers kill thousands of people every year. And that's after all the DUI arrests. How many more will be killed when nobody is there to get them off of the road?
If you honestly think this country is better off with fewer and smaller police departments, perhaps you should go on a ride-a-long some day and actually hear all the junk that goes on. |

I think a better way to cut cost is to lay off half the aides to various government officials. As an example I went to visit my Congressman and he had 3 aides in his office (I have no idea what the total number is but would venture to guess it is at least 10 when his sub offices are taken into account) and as another example MS Obama has 23 aides all making 50K or more a year.
It is rather funny though you do not see a correlation between the number of police and falling crime rates |

yeah although it seems like their's not much for them to do
they need a lot of officers in case stuff reallt big hapens
but it's smart though becasue they'd rather have more officers than less when they really need them
and if you just fired them they'd be outta jobs and that's not good either |
