Compare the procedures for assembling a photo array lineup with those of an in-person lineup.?

What are the similarities and differences? For what purpose would you use each one? Also, discuss some of the concerns with the accuracy of identification in a line up?

To much for here. We fill books on the last question and legal opinions fill tomes.

A good photo array is used when you cannot use a live line up. If the bad guy is not in custody, if the victim/witness is in the hospital and so on.

In both cases you try to get persons with similar basic descriptions, not twins just similar. If there is something specific with the bad guy, like he is bald, and you don't have bald fillers you have everyone where a hat. With photos you print out all mug shots or only pictures that are not suggestive of arrest. You can also use multiple sources of photos for photo arrays. I have successfully (successfully means they withstood motions to exclude the evidence) used multiple at random and the suspects drivers licenses. Also use wedding photos.

In both types you have to inform the victim/witness that you would like them to look at the lineup/array but you don't mention why. You don't answer the inevitable question of "do you have him"? When you show them the photos you can show them one at a time to measure their reaction for investigative purposes. The reaction is not an identification.
When you show the array/line up you simply ask the victim/witness if the recognize anyone and if the do you ask from where or why the recognize.

In photos array if an ID is made you have the victim/witness sign the back or front of the identified photos and go through an inventory process of all of the photos uses.
IN line up you take a picture of the total line up and a picture of the specific person ID'ed

Perhaps the student should simply do his or her assigned reading (Osterburg & Ward, 2007 pp. 267 -282) in an effort to respond to the discussion question rather than trying to get others to answer the question for him/her?
