Complaining about a police officer?
Find answers to your legal question.

Complaining about a police officer?

I drove into the ditch the other when I hit loose gravel
the car got stuck because it was so muddy
so I called the local police and a tow
but when the cop got there he was SO incredibly mean
everything he said was like an attack on me
I'm a seventeen year old girl
the things he was saying were really really hurtful.
I called my mom sobbing after he left and she said that I should call the station and say something..
is this okay?? or a really bad idea?

cops are SUPPOSED to be help people and society, not make them feel bad about themselves.

are they all just high on power?

Go to the Police Station and talk to the Chief of Police. Just tell him your story and your concerns about the situation. Police departments are like most other organizations and the boss needs to know when he has a potential problem officer on his team. Try to be as dispassionate as you can so as to get the facts on the table. The Chief will be responsible for taking care of the situation.

You're asking about how to complain about an officer, but "you never stated what he actually said to you." What did he say so that we can determine a complaint is in order or not? Did he tell you the truth, which is not worthy of a complaint, or did he truly say something unprofessional? Let us know so that we can help you.

maybe, just maybe the cop was mad because he has seen so many other incidents where the outcome wasn't as happy; you lived and the has probably rolled on other such calls where young people have died for not watching the road and not being careful. After awhile even the nicest cop can be a bit jaded knowing that young people often drive like they own the road and they will live forever. If you see enough crashes where stupidity was an issue, and young people are lying dead or dying in the street, you will occasionally get angry. believe me, it wasn't as much a personal attack against you at it was the cop venting his general concerns over your welfare.

He probably decided to chew your butt instead of giving a ticket.

I bet if we looked at the video of it, he was just counseling you about your driving and didn't really anything too particularly mean or hurtful.

I base this off all the times I've had 17 year old females complain about officers, then when I pull the video, I don't see them say anything out of line.

If thats how they react when you do nothing, imagine how they will react if you complain?

First, its good your mom empowered you to take action, but since you are just 17, perhaps she can call and then let you talk after she gets to the right person.

Second, cops are "supposed" to be the good guys, but it is an incredibly stressful job, and unless Concerned Citizens report problems, he may hide his stress from his boss or coworkers and not get the help he needs. Sometimes, sadly, they even go home and take it out on their families, and their families are afraid to report the domestic violence because who are they supposed to call? His friends, the cops? But if you give his boss a heads up, then they can steer him into the counseling support programs that are supposed to help the cops manage always being engaged with lawbreakers and in life threatening situations so that when they are SUPPOSED to help innocent people they can.
Good luck, and do act!

You was just unlucky to meet a mean cop, you could mention it anyway as he may be like this with everyone, total reports about him will expose him as a dodgy cop eventually. He just makes the good cops look bad, & they need to weadle out the rotten eggs.

Not all - you were just unfortunate enough to run into a bad apple, or a normally ok person who needs some help, police have to deal with some physically and emotionally extreme things, really upsetting things - this would never excuse that behaviour you describe, but might explain it - I think you should definitley go speak to someone senior at the station (with your mom) to explain what happened - just say what you said here - and yes they are supposed to help....maybe by complaining you will be helping one of them in the long run... you will certainly help them improve their service to the law abiding public- don't take what happened personally in any case, I really doubt it was about "you" .

Complaining will probably be a dead end. Just keep this experience in mind for the day when you are called to be a juror. When you are on the jury - remember this experience when you are asked to determine the credibility of any officer. This is especially important if your peers are painfully out of touch with reality and believe that police officers are inherently credible and responsible.

I have had cops do that to me and my sister, they are pretty mean up here, but not all cops are like that, very few actually.

-Since when is being a Cop not considered a real ******* job?

Not To Serious
File a written complaint against that cop that way it gos on his record.

All depends in which country you are in.
I am afraid, you are not in UK !

Problem Child
Thats one out of 1,000,000 sworn law enforcement offficers in this country.
Hardly an epidemic, hardly a reason to use terms like "all", when factually and experience wise, you could not possibly know if "all" cops are like that. I highly doubt that you have met all 1,000,000 US cops.

It would be like me saying all 17 year old girls make stupid, factually incorrect statements based soley on their side of the story and opinion...simply because one did.

You said it right high on power. If a simple accident happens it is because you are on drugs or drunk. That is their tunnel vision and they think they know everything but most of then are just above STUPID and can not get a real job.
