Cops- Do you really think you're making the world a safer place by treating weed smokers as criminals?

I agree.....I think effects of alcohol are worse than that of weed. But,if the government made it legal....they would be out of a lot of money. So therefore it will never be legal.

Yes.

Cops do not makes the laws, they just enforce them.

It is not up to them to decide which laws are appropriate, they are expected to enforce them all.

Selective enforcement of laws would be an even greater disservice to the community. Especially when it comes to laws the majority of people agree with.

I am pot-friendly, I partake on a fairly continual basis.

That being said, I understand it is illegal and I understand the great men and women who wear the badge don't WANT to take me to jail, they dont WANT me to lose my job, the dont WANT to see someones life ruined over a choice.

But they also dont WANT to lose their job, they dont WANT to possibly end up in jail themselves and they dont WANT to ruin their own lives over a personal disagreement with the duties of their job.

They do not make the laws, they merely enforce them. What do you do for a living? I am sure there are many instances where you are forced to treat people differently at work than you would outside of work. Same thing with Police Officers...or better know as law ENFORCEment.

They are people like you and me and only trying to earn a living on top of keeping the streets safer and society in order. They catch a lot of flak for making sure society is accountable as much as possible and its getting to be a bit ridiculous when people such as you KNOWINGLY AND WILLINGLY break the law and then criticize those who enforce the laws you chose to break.

If you cannot do the time, do not do the crime. If you cannot be a responsible user of marijuana, alcohol, tylenol, milk, cookies, etc. dont ingest them. I have never heard of nor seen anyone be arrested for responsible use of controlled substance. Never.

TxTopCop
Yep... I sure do. We don't make laws, we just enforce them.

If I didn't enforce the law, I would not be doing my job.

Sorry it took me so long to answer your question I was reading over my job description. I didn't see anything in there about making the world safer. I did read a part about enforcing the laws of my state though.

Smoking dope is illegal so when I find someone breaking that law I charge them with that crime. Since it is a crime that would mean dope smokers are criminals. In my state you have to be doing more then just smoking pot to get locked up. You usually get a citation so don't act like were putting people in prison for life over a dime bag. It's like getting a speeding ticket. I also can tell you about one dead fifteen year old because some idiot was high on weed so don't act like everyone on pot just sits around and eats Cheetos all day......they drive fast and pass on a hill and hit mini vans head on.

So to answer your question, no I'm not necessarily going to make the world safer by charging someone with smoking dope (or charging someone with any other crime) but I would be upholding the law. That is my job.

I don't put my uniform on in a phone both and save the world from villains. I arrest criminals and answer calls like I'm payed to do.

No, I don't. But I also don't think I'm making the world a safer place by arresting murderers, robbers, or rapists.

I *do* think I'm doing my job in all those cases, however. If the people of the State of California, through their legislators, think that treating a marijuana smoker as a criminal is what we should be doing, then that's their business. I'm just here to enforce the laws they pass.

Methinks you're barking up the wrong tree.

sensible_man
WEED SMOKERS, do you not think that violating the law does not make you a criminal?

Answer it yourself: In a time where cops carry more weapons than ever before, are they making our society and communities safer?

Yes, no one law is more important than another. We enforce all laws and don't pick and choose. Without enforcement of laws there would only be anarchy.

Clueless
totally agree with you trooper 3 =)

besides
try a different way to get high, how about getting high on the wonders of life? instead of on grass??

smithtamara16
I think when it comes to drinking or smoking........the drinking should be against the law, I have never seen or heard of a person smoking a joint then getting behind the wheel and killing people, I dont smoke or drink, been around them dont want to be them, but really, the drinking is far worse than the smoking

BulldogBlitz
yes. treating a person who is high on pot just as they are driving drunk IS making one little portion of the world a safe place.

**newsflash coltsfan** i didn't say this scenario applied to "all" those who toke up. if you are doing it in the privacy of your own home...and not distrubuting it to 3rd graders at the local elementary, i don't see much of a problem with it.. but in reality how many tokers out there are having DEA agents crash through their door for smoking one joint on a saturday afternoon in their bedroom?

should pot be legalized because three dudes in the outskirts of indianapolis enjoy some shwag in the privacy of their own home?

Yes. If you want to be a pot head, lobby your congressman to make it legal then I won't have to enforce it.

turkish delight
Yes it would as some people who smoke large amounts do sometimes start to get paranoid eventually and cause havoc with themselves and others even turning to crime to get more money.
