Cops- how could law enforcement be more effective?

Do you think law enforcement is more effective when it is repressing actions, or should the role of the police be that of building morality and responsibility in society?

Morals and responsibility are developed at a very early age, even before school years. Parents are the ones in the best position to teach these things.

Keep in mind the US average is one police officer for every 500 citizens, and establishing morals would take a substantial amount of time. It just isn't practical for anyone else but the parents.

As an Austin cop, I can see where the "crazy" comes from in crazy dave. But to answer the original question, the police are not equipped to build morality and responsiblity, thats a parents job. We protect, serve and enforce existing laws and statutes.

Morality of their own members should be priority #1.

law enforcement can be more effective in both of those ways. people always say when a cop beats on someone that it is wrong, well think of the things they have to go through! they risk their lives every day to protect innocent people and everyone makes cops out to be bad people. but i do think that law enforcement need to start working on building more morality and responsibility in society.

well, here in boise idaho it would be
getting rid of BS laws
getting rid of half the police force
training the police to protect and to SERVE / accountability

if i treat someone like crap at work (having an attitude, making them feel uncomfortable, etc) i get written up or possibly even fired. why are cops allowed to do this?
this little town of boise idaho does not need as many cops as it has
every day on the 3 mile drive home from work i see AT LEAST 2 cop cars patrolling
once a week i see AT LEAST one person getting a ticket
i have never seen anyone or anything get mugged murdered hurt or stolen from by anyone and i have lived here for 19 years

people here fear the police more then we fear chomos, muggers, murderers, or any other criminal and thats stupid.

idaho is cutting the budget on schools yet there are signs everywhere saying "police force hiring!"

and the worst part? boise only has a population of just over 200,000...
ridiculous

This may seem mean or primitive but if the police acted like the Russian law enforcement we wouldn't have have have the issues we do. They invoke fear upon the area, pretty much saying if you commit an illegal action, you WILL pay.

Law enforcement would be more effective (extremely more, in fact), if gun control was virtually nonexistent. Now before you think that criminals would have a field day, consider this: criminals don't obey laws anyway. So why do we take guns away from honest citizens? If everyone was carrying a firearm, or at least allowed to with no restriction, crime would drop like a brick and the police would be able to have a great deal of stress taken off of the department. That would also cut costs and taxes, so everyone wins.

More gun control means more violence. Countries with little gun control (not the USA, so don't even go there; we are regulated beyond belief) have very little crime. Go look it up. If you were going to rob a store and you knew that a gun would be pointed at you at the exact time you were going to commit the crime, would you still do it? No, and neither would anyone else.

I personally respect the police, but the few corrupt ones make everyone think cops are bad guys. They need to remove these cancers.

The police are not responsible for "building morality and responsibility in society." That is the job of parents. The reponsibility of law enforcement is just that: law enforcement.

The police can not! They would first have to have morals and be held responsible for their own actions! Here in Austin there have been officer involved shootings resulting in the deaths of unarmed citizens. The officers involved were fired after investigation for misconduct and not following police procedure. They did not go to jail! What is up with police murdering American citizens and not going to prison? If it had been any other American citizen that had committed murder such as these officers did they would be in prison! How can you say building morals? I know a lot of police officers that arrest or cite people for things that they personally do not see to be a crime but because their job tells them that they have to they do it anyway. To me that shows a lack of morals to go against your own personal beliefs for a job! The police are corrupt and are all about making money for their city and state! Protect and serve my @$S! Cops, never around when you need one and always around you don't. America is becoming a police state! The government is slowly taking away our rights little by little, and the police keep violating the few that we have left!

Exactly how do you think that police officers can "build morality and responsibility in society"?

I believe that it is the responsibility of parents to teach their children morals and values.

If more citizens became involved, more foot patrol in bad neighborhoods. trooper 3 has a very valid point as well, parents who act immoral have children who act immoral.

Are You Serious?
Shoot every criminal they see. Then criminals would be eliminated.
