Could someone possibly elaborately explain the process of investigating a crime scene?

I mainly would like an explanation for how things are dealt with when a body is involved, and then explanations for things more minor than potential homicide would be greatly appreciated. I would really like to know what it is really like to be apart of such an investigation. I know a vague outline of what happens in order, but I want it in great detail. Please don't answer this with bits and pieces you've seen in cop shows. Unless you are truly experienced and/or knowledgeable in such fields I'd rather you didn't answer.
Thanks guys!

Anytime a body is involved, you assume the worst. Therefore, all deaths are treated as homicides until the evidence proves otherwise.

The actual process would fill pages, so for purpose of this question, i will abbreviate it substantially.

The scene is photographed before anything is disturbed. Evidence is documented and collected. An autopsy will be performed. Friends, neighbors, relatives, and coworkers are questioned. If someones answers do not match the evidence collected, the investigation will concentrate on them.
