Death penalty?

in what states of the us is the death penalty allowed and what do you think about it?

Well according to this website:
http://www.deathpenaltyinfo.org/state/

States that DO allow are:
Alabama
Arizona
Arkansas
California
Colorado
Connecticut
Delaware
Florida
Georgia
Idaho
Indiana
Illinois
Kentucky
Louisiana
Maryland
Mississippi
Missouri
Montana
Nebraska
Nevada
New Hampshire
New Jersey
New Mexico
New York *
North Carolina
Ohio
Oklahoma
Oregon
Pennsylvania
South Carolina
South Dakota
Tennessee
Texas
Utah
Virginia
Washington
Wyoming

ALSO
- U.S. Gov't
-U.S. Military

My view, is that putting anyone to death is a tragic event. It demonstrates that our respective society does not have the medical or psychological advancement to understand why certain people commit such horrific crimes, nor how to fix them from doing so again.

Unfortunately then, once someone becomes such a danger to society that they can never be released back in to society, the question left is whether we, as a society, are in any way responsible to provide any quality of life to such a person, while keeping them from possibility of harming anyone else.

I say give them the choice.

1) Be confined for the rest of their lives, AND be expected to perform some sort of service to pay for their meals and upkeep, (afterall, why should I work and pay taxes to support criminals, and they not be expected to provide any service to support themselves), or,

2) Be put to death.

Death as revenge is not a spiritualy sound ideal, and does nothing to easy the pain of victims/victim families.

Death to concede that our society failed that individual, is perhaps the most humane.

You have the list of the death penalty states. The arguement about "we shouldn't judge" is a cop out -- the death penalty judges the crime committed, not the person. And, in Texas, if you are given the death penalty, there is an automatic appeal (review) by the state, so the arguement about the cost of appeals is invalid. The death penalty is a good thing, but isn't the deterrant that the authors wanted it to be.

????
I know it is allowed in Missouri- that's where I live- and I know it is allowed in Texas. I'm pretty sure it is allowed in Illinois as well. I definitely think that the death penalty is ok. If you know you will be put to death if you kill someone, and you kill someone, then you deserve what you get. They may need to re-write criteria so innocent people don't end up on death roll, but I definitely think the death penalty should be allowed.

Around me the death penalty is in Ohio And Kentucky, and I always believed the punishment should fit the crime!

I'm not sure how i feel about it yet. Some crimes are quite nasty, but is eye for an eye proper punishment. I'm a strong believer in forgiveness, but some individuals will never change, and jsut continue to harm others.

who are we to take a life? in doing so we are doing the same thing the other person did.

A life for a life. There are too many people who commit horrendous crimes, are found guilty, do there time and then are released upon the unsuspecting public, one may be living beside you, how do we know that they are not? Then once again commit a horrendous crime. If the person was put to death the first time then there would not be another angle given their wings too early. I say the government should let the people of the nation vote either for, or against, and whatever the public has voted for will be.

States that have the death penalty. AL, AZ, AK, CA, CO, CT, FL, GA, ID, IL, IN, KS, LA, MA, MI, MO, MT, NE, NH, NJ, NM, NY, NC, OH, OR, PA, SC, SD, TE, TX, VA, WA, and WY, DE, KY, NV, OK, UT, and the military has folks on "death row"

I think ALL states should have a death penalty. I think endless appeals are a waste of time. I think there should NOT be a maximum amount of time spent on death row. They should be put out of our misery sooner.

If the death penalty is NOT a deterrent, then why HAVEN'T I killed Michael Moore yet?

"If we execute murderers and there is in fact no deterrent effect, we have killed a bunch of murderers. If we fail to execute murderers, and doing so would in fact have deterred other murders, we have allowed the killing of a bunch of innocent victims. I would much rather risk the former. This, to me, is not a tough call."

I think it is needed and should be used more.

See the source for death penalty info in the US.

I am categorically opposed to the death penalty. I think that life in prison is a far worse punishment.

hawkeyes
I dont beleive in it because it actually cost more money to pay for all those crappy appeals then to just to keep someone locked up, and its not like being imprisoned and butt raped daily for the rest of your life is any better than dying.

I think in some cases the death penalty is just, but then again my religion states that Jesus will pass judgement and no one else should....
mixed feelings....

Its really immaterial in what state the death penalty allowed; because I do not believe in killing......even by law.

Unfortunately the death penalty is not used as much as it should.
Those on death row are more likely to die of natural causes, than by lethal injection.
