A half ounce is not that much marijuana. It's a fairly minor deal in the big picture.

Many police departments take drugs seriously and an arrest for it more seriously.

It probably DQs you at the present time. Since most police departments want a 3-5 year buffer between use/possession. It doesn't matter what you got it knocked down to. They look at the case as a whole.

You can still possibly be a cop, but it won't be in the near future. Best advice, wait 5 years, have a perfect record and apply. I do background investigations for my department. If I see one possession charge and it is really old on an otherwise good canidate. I would probably recommend them for hire.

Yes, it can affect your career. They do extensive background checks and will ask you questions about it, if they even decide to consider you.

But, if they let you do become a cop: FYI dont do NYPD. they dont pay enough. go to suffolk.

My husband works for our Sheriff's Dept. and they just hired a guy who was arrested for marijuana possession a few eyars ago. Just quit doing drugs, keep your nose clean and be upfront about your past. Cops value honesty very highly, and if you get caught in a lie you don't stand a chance of working for them.

You may have a chance if you are totally honest with them. It is really hard to say though since they may have a zero tolerance attitude toward drug use. This is some thing that I would do.

Call and tell them that you are seeking employment with them, then also let them know about the drug charge that you had. Give them all the facts, they should be able to tell you over the phone if you will be able to seek employment with them. At least by calling them you will be able to find out the answer to your question. By your calling them you will find out the truth, also calling will help you to not have to feel embarrassed if they should say no. You won't have to have any one else hear your business, that may be with in ear shot. You will at least be able to save face, so to speak.

The following factors are some of those which would be cause for disqualification:

Any conviction of an offense which is punishable by one or more years imprisonment (felony).
Any repeated convictions of an offense which indicate a disrespect for the law, a lack of good moral character or disposition towards violence and disorder.
Discharge from employment, where such discharge indicates poor behavior and/or an inability adjusting to discipline.
A Dishonorable discharge from the armed forces.
Persons convicted of a petit larceny.
Persons convicted of any domestic violence offense.
Candidates must pass all medical, physical, written psychological and oral psychological examinations.

a violation isnt a crime so there wont be a criminal history for them to look up. It would be like trying to find if you have any speeding tickets.

That should be no real problem. Talk to policemen and learn some abut what they do. You will need to take the proper courses in a university and graduated with good grades.

Most policemen I have ever known have egos way to big for their uniforms.
