There is a word for what the officer said but I just can't remember it...oh yeah it's called a joke. People today are just too serious and don't know when to lighten up.

Disrespecting and officer is not illegal. That said, there is no good reason to do so. If the particular officer doesn't deserve respect, they are not going to change because you failed to show respect.

Well, he was joking and yours would have been a joke in response to his. So you would have been ok to say it.

you should have. if he givin u ticket or something than you can just go to court, and tell the judge that you answered this to the initial comment that was disrespectful to your mother. 95% chances you win cause hes supposed to represent the law, to serve and protect. use the magic words disrespectful comment and you won't have to pay your ticket!

As far as I know, there is no law against disrespecting an officer. Unless you are instigating a fight and it reaches the level of "fighting words" you are free to speak your mind. But be careful. There are times when it is much more wise to keep your mouth shut to avoid any unnecessary problems. Especially when dealing with the police.

Yeah, dont say anything. Its sad when Police Officers act like this, and it seems more and more of them do these days. He was rude, but two wrongs don't make a right. Alot of them are on a power trip.

No. He didn't say you WERE like your mom. He said not to be. There's a difference. You wouldn't have been defending yourself against anything... It's wise not to do what your mother did, you should follow the rules and that's what he was emphasizing.
