i am planning on joining but i am an out of state resident and wanted to know if i can just change my address. and still live out of state... but i have hurd during the screening process they come check up on you.

You do not have to be a resident until after you are hired, so there is no reason for them to visit during the employment screening.
The department does employ 39,000 officers, I suspect it would be time consuming to visit them all. However, if you are found lying about your residence after you are hired, you will almost certainly be terminated. |

Whatever you do, don't lie. That will more than likely preclude you from joining the PD. Most departments want good officers and consider out of state residences as long as they move or reside in-state (or very close, such as NJ in your case). |

Yes they will verify everything you tell them during the background check and you will also have to have a valid NYS drivers license. |
