Nope it is not a bad thing at all and you will find that most of them when asked what they do will say they are a cop, at least the ones i know do.

I have heard that the old timers don't like it too much, but I have never met anyone that is offended by it.

No. I've met cops who were offended by it but most of us don't care.

Now I usually get offended by pig jokes unless they're funny.

it may not be your best choice of words if you are trying to be polite.

and i think that years ago it might have been taken offensively.

but i think it has lost most of its edge by now and would probably not really upset a police officer if you are otherwise not acting offensively.

It is a little informal, but I don't think most would have a problem with. I mean don't call them Cop Smith, but if you are referring to them as a general organization, I don't think they would get offended if you said, "The cops came to my house last night."

No to the younger Officers it's not offensive but to the older Officers like the command staff it might be. Now If you called them a pig or dough nut eater or flipped them the middle finger then things might be different.

Funny thing is in Illinois we have a bunch of Harley riding cops that have a "club" called wild pigs
at the last biker function I was at they attended
they got mad when I said that they are just like a bunch of (insert N word here)
ONLY THEY can say THAT word

Nope. It started as a slang term for the fact the buttons of their uniforms were made of COPper.

Just as in England, they are called Bobbies because the police force in England was started by Sir Robert "Bobby" Peel.

For me, no. When people call me officer, I appreciate it more, but being called a cop is just fine and not offensive.
