Do cops intentionally try to make you mad?

A cop pulled me over last night and asked if I had been drinking. I said no and I was honest. Anyway he started searching my car and as he was searching he said, "don't think you can hide it under the seat and get away with it." I was like WTF but I didn't say anything. So he doesn't find anything and rudely tells me to go on home.

Since I have no answers, I will assume the answer is yes.

I think they are usually very rude...but then again they almost have to be to get by in this world. But I still think its not right the way they act sometimes.

Hell yes they do! I watched a St.paul Mn. sheriff beat up his dog becuz he was so pissed off that he couldnt find "anything" in my car! (after 2 hr.s of searching) yet he had my car towed, and I sat 12 hours in jail while they ran my fingerprints to make sure i wasnt wanted somewhere!! (thats the excuse they gave me for pulling me over) when I asked what the hell he was looking for, he told me he had probable cause for drugs! WTF? He had a pot sticker pasted on the back glass window, which seperates the front seat from the back, where i was detained, AND he was searching ME? When I asked about the sticker he replied it was there for entertainment purposes, yeah, I was really amused and entertained by that! being as I had given him NO reason in any way to perform a search. They do whatever they want ,cuz they can and will do whatever it takes to piss U off when they have nothing else to get you for. U got lucky that night....and yes it helps to bite that tounge when needed!

Sounds to me like he violated your 4th amendment rights. a lot of Cops think they can do whatever they like.

all cops are different, I did have a few who were actually polite (probably rookies).

Cops intentionally try to make you feel STUPID.

"Do you know why I pulled you over?"

"Ummm...nope, that's why I have this puzzled look on my face."

"Well you were going 50 in a 30."

"Okay..."

"Do you know why speeding is bad?"

You get the point...they treat you like a child!

do you live in a small town? Sometimes I think that those cops from small towns just get bored and need some action

Indeed, there are some "badge heavy" cops like that out there in every city. I ran across a few of them harassing people just because they can.

Ok, so he pulled you over and asked if you had been drinking? then what, there are many steps between that and searching your car. Did he ask you to step out of the car? Did he give you a field sobriety test? He either needs PC to search your car or you need to give him permission to do so.

There is obviously a lot you left out of your story.

The only way the police can search your car is with your permission, if they see something illegal or if your placed under arrest , small town $8.00 an hour cops get away with a lot of b.s. but you should always report them if their in error.

Yes. A little known fact is their IQ testing information:
http://www.ananova.com/news/story/sm_56314.html

Often, when adrenalin is high and the town is running smoothly, they want to provoke an incident to vent steam. You can imagine who it is taken out on if they aren't unable by quitting time, and go home.

Your best defense is to set your cell phone camera on the dash and videotape away. In fact, it is your only defense should he escalate the incident into a new, police brutality complaint.

i think that constitutes police harassment. police in making checkpoint or moving vehicle search should announce their name and position and the purpose of the search and it is only limited to visual search and not extensive search. checking under the seat of your car is extensive and if you didnt allow him, the police offices does not have any right to search that area. unless he has probable cause based on experience that a crime is being committed. or he found an apparent evidence of a crime accidentally which is considered as evidence in plain view. nevertheless if i am in your situation i will also allow the police officer to search under the seat because, on the onset police officers carry a gun while i dont. but doesnt leave me any recourse to his conduct. i will get his name and ask what station he is connected and i will report his conduct to his superior.

It still is under your seat.

I guess that a cop is just like a person, they're all different people except they have authority. There can be nice ones, bad ones, mean ones, etc. Some people become a cop because they want people to serve justice, and others possibly just like being mean, while getting paid, you know? Don't worry your better than him. It's just how the world rotates.

If you live in NSW Australia the police are entitled to pull you over for a random breath test. Whilst your car is pulled over they may run a check on your registration or licence details. If you have a previous history of any offences they may make further searches of your vehicle which under current legislation they are entitled to do. The bottom line is if you are not doing anything illegal then you have nothing to worry about. And no they don't try to make you mad they are just doing their job!

Well I guess they dont teach student and law by sherrifs in schools anymore(but that was 20+ years ago)so I tell you what the sheriff teaching my class at the time told us...When you get pulled over, the cops do what they call an As$hole test.If you pass, they dont hassle you,in your case he probably profiled you and thought he had something, using drinking as probable cause, when you came clean,he chose to search your car to see if anything else would come up.Since he wasted his time,he dismissed you because he realized his profiling instincts were incorrect, annoying himself.

Unless the cop had a warrant, he has no right to search your vehicle. If he asks to search your vehicle, and you do not consent to the search, he cannot search your vehicle (without consequences). However, by consenting to a search (which I assume you did), you allow the policeman access to the inside of your vehicle. Police search vehicles because they are told and influenced to apprehend as many drunk drivers as possible, because of the dangers they pose. They do intentionally try to make you mad, as that may reveal in your reactions that you may be hiding something.
