Find answers to your legal question.

Do cops respect anyone and actually have people they look up to, or are they just always strict & bossy?

lol. I mean for real. I know they're human...somewhere inside of that tough outside exterior, and I wonder, do they have personalities, people they look up to, and actually respect, and treat like real human beings....

or basically they'd like to think that they were above it all..and always act strict and bossy?

Also..do they have the same rights to arrest someone, issue tickets etc, when they're OFF duty, or only while theyre ON duty in uniform?

How does that work?

I have mixed feelings towards cops. A few friends were cops in my life, and I can't generalize and call them all bad because these guys were just the friendliest, nicest people you could ever meet,

but some others were just wow.

I guess that's humanity in general though, we're all different.

But I mean judging from what I see, and even the news, and tv shows I watch about cops, heck even the show "cops" lol..they just 90% of the time treat the general public like they're low life slobs.

(But I don't blame them sometimes).

I was wondering if the way they treat the general public...is the way they treat everyone, including their own family/friends girlfriend/boyfriend... I don't know.

They seem like they're just very tough people, and I was wondering if that's basically how it is, or if they're human too and can be reasoned with?

It just seems like you're dealing with the terminator or the t-1000 and they cannot be reasoned with, and no emotion applies lol.

cops...help us out here!

What do you think?

As a Police Officer, I speak for my fellow police officers when I say that we see the worst of the city/town that we work for - that is where the "strictness" comes from, by having to deal with a majority of people that do not understand why he/she is the victim and/or offender of a particular event. Trying to explain this to them is like trying to fit pieces of a puzzle together, and at times it could be stressful. Unfortunately, some Police Officers have a difficult time separating these work issues from home and bring this unfortunate stress to their household, and have a difficult time coping with it.

In addition, we obviously deal with the biggest liars on this job, and at times, we start to believe that everyone is lying to us simply to get out of a ticket that we are forced to write to meet the departmental quota (if applicable per city/town).

Police Officers wear many hats: law enforcer, teacher, guidance counselor, psychologist, lawyer, coach, etc. It's a job that requires you to think analytically, and teaches you to be aware at all times that the media always has a camera lurking around you. Just face it: people enjoy watching the media and Hollywood falsely portray us as the "bad guys" of recent times.

There are many people in my life that I definitely look up to; family, friends, etc. One must put his//her shoes in the life of a Police Officer to really experience the trials and tribulations that we endure on a day-to-day basis. I chose to become a Police Officer because of the everyday challenges this job has to give - it's fun! Yes, I enjoy helping people and ridding the streets of criminals.

God bless all of the Police Officers, and my love and empathy will be with them for the rest of my life.

Respect is something you earn. I have always been treated respectfully in my encounters with law enforcement.

I do carts at target and find myself chatting with cops alot for some reason, I usually just joke around with them. But no, they are just regular guys, its just they can't look the other way while you commit a crime.

I think cops are no different than anyone else. You have your good and bad. I rarely deal with either as I don't do anything wrong and avoid areas where there is trouble.

If you dealt with the bottom low life scum of society everyday for eight hours a day, you probably wouldn't have much emotion left either.

Unless you walk in a Police Officers shoes, you have no idea what its like and its VERY unlikely a Police Officer will look up to you or anybody else until you do. Of course there are exceptions: Military or Emergency Personnel (EMT's Paramedics, Fire Fighters) who are also under the gun every second of every day, cleaning up messes that some low life makes and trying to make sense of situations that no sane person can make sense of. The trouble isn't that we don't look up to anyone, the problem is finding someone who meets or exceeds our standards. Finding people who are Honest, Responsible, Hardworking and Sincere, to look up to is no picnic and judging from todays Youth who are growing up to take our places, the task won't become any easier in the future either. BTW- To answer your question about arresting someone when off duty? An Officer is never "Off Duty" enough not to make an arrest.

Killer Queen
Let me guess. You committed a crime. If people have nothing wrong then they have no reason to not like cops. And people quickly change their tune when they are the victims. I live in a very rural area now but I can honestly say that our police dept does not go out of their way to harass anyone and they provide excellent service to the residents. I greatly appreciate them.

We are human. Let me help answer some of your questions. Yes, a law enforcement officer does have the right to arrest when they are not off duty. Most times though, they'll call an officer to assist simply because they can not detain you in their p.o.v. The reason the officers can arrest are becaused they are commissioned and are to uphold and enforce the law as long as they are an officer. In most states, you have what is known as P.O.S.T. This stands for Peace Officer Standards and Training. Each state regulates their own officers through this place. They set the standards and prerequisites and also have the power to decertify someone based on actions or allegatioins.

Now for your question as to why some treat the "public" like slobs. Some are seasoned vets who are "Burnt - Out" or who no longer like their jobs. This happens because people have seen some horrific things and have been into it way too long and have been affected by what they have seen. I mean you have the power to not only kill, but save a life. People are affected when they can't save a life more than when they justifiably kill someone. Not everyone treats people horribly. There are some that have a bad case of "I was beat up in high school and now hold the power to make other bow down to me", but most aren't like that.

And to answer how we are in private. We are just like you or anyone else. We have families and hobbies, but we have the strong desire to protect them more so than most. We are faced with people who have no problem telling you that they will kill not only you but your family. We take it to heart and try to prevent that. We also have some that have problems. Take a job that doesn't always pay the greatest and add the stress of the job and seeing "Punks" getting off of drug charges, rape charges, so on and so forth. It begins to make the other side look worth it to some.

I hope this helps.

if you cooperate with the cops, then they are extremely nice to you. dont lie, dont hide anything. treat them with respect and they will treat you with it back.

people dont like the police because they were doing something they werent supposed to be doing and got caught and are now whining about it like "F--- THE POLICE MAN!" and s--- like that..

if you watch cops and shows like that, they only get aggressive if the people dont EXACTLY what the cop tells them..get on the ground, face down...spread your legs... and the entire time theyre standing there, not doing what theyre supposed to be doing just being like "I DIDNT DO NOTHIN MAN"

dont get me wrong, i bet there are some twisted cops out there..but for the most part, thats why people hate the police.

Ever met a Drill Sergeant, a Marine or a Donald Trump.
Every line of job has it's Aholes and nice guys.
We all have families.
The line we walk within police work is the thin blue line.
We are observed by everyone, expected to stand taller then everyone else, know everything about the law and criminals when asked, yet still be human.

I think you've pretty much answered your own question, several times. And - reality check - TV is TV, movies are movies, and they're all fiction and dramatized, even the "reality" shows. Would you apply those generalities to any other class of people? Probably not.

AJ
Cops are a mixed bag just like any other segment of the population. Cops have to be tough and have an "in charge" attitude while at work. That is what the job requires. Some cops have a hard time turning the cop switch off when they go home. That is one reason the divorce rate for cops is so high. Cops are never "off duty". They always can make arrests. But they usally do not get involved when off duty unless they have to.

They are usually quite polite unless you interupt them during coffee.
