Do i have a chance at being a police officer?
Find answers to your legal question.

Do i have a chance at being a police officer?

I have a bachelors in Business and I feel that i'm qualified in every way except for my driving record. I'm 24 years old and I have Sr-22 insurance (high risk) I recently got my License back: it had been suspended for a couple years because I kept driving with it (the suspension). Nothing alcohol related, just speeding, stop signs, u turns, and everything else that kept me suspended for about 2 years.

Also, does anyone know how long i have to have high risk insurance now that I have my license back?

thanks

The Sr-22 will show most police departments that you are incapable of obeying the law, in which most would assume, for that reason you are also incapable of enforcing it. The bacholors in business has no true relevance to becoming an officer, however it does show your commitment to suceeding. At the moment, yes your driving record will hurt you tremendously in trying to become an officer, but with a clean record in the future and honest answers in the interview process, along with a good physical condition, yes it is possible you have a chance.

The only thing that can DQ you from the hiring process is being dishonest about ANY part of your history - your driving record included. You had better get every fact down about your past record for the background investigator. If the Investigator comes across ANY part that he thinks is deceit, he might make a reccomendation for a DQ.

Other than that, I wouldn't worry too much. Traffic infractions and low level misdemeanors aren't a huge deal, especially if it's far in the past...that and the fact that you learned from it - and you let them know that.

really, they would hire anyone as a cop as long as you dont have anything domestic violence related on your record

No, you wouldn't be considered as a qualified applicant.

Having a lengthy history is one strike against you, having a prior (especially a recent) suspension would be a strike out.

Disregard for traffic laws indicates an immature applicant who has no respect for the laws of his/her state.

Possibly, if you wait 4-5 years, you might have a better chance.... after the past citations and suspensions are off your record.

Good Luck

I don't think there are too many Law Enforcement Agencies that would hire you with a driving record like that, since you had to drive their vehicles. It's too much liability. Even if you just had a lot of tickets without the whole suspension issue - you would still have to go a couple of years without getting any tickets at all to even be considered.

I think you will have a difficult time unless you wait a while. Even though you didn't have any alcohol related driving issues, your driving history shows a pattern of behavior that wouldn't be tolerated as an officer. I think a chief of police would want to see you have a clear record for at least 3 years, if not more.

In my State the insurance company can only get the last 3 years of your driving record. They already have yours so it is possible their memory will last longer. SR-22 is a State of Washington designator, if my memory serves me correct, and is a requirement of the State. The State for those purposes, I believe, goes for 5 years or as long as a judge required it (foggy memory on the judge part).

May sound funny but Washington State law mandates that police officers obey all traffic laws unless they are in pursuit of a traffic violator or criminal. So if you think you would get to drive fast and not stop at stop signs, quite the contrary.

I'm pretty sure you will be fine, just as long as it's nothing intoxicated related. But among that, you also have to be really fit to go to police college, no sh*t man, they train hard out. So if you're prepared for the training, then you're good to go.

Everything is included in a background check while you are being investigated for law enforcement. Your driving record shows a level of irresponsibility and impulsiveness that police departments don't want. They want to see responsibility and maturity. Not only did you keep driving with a suspension but you kept getting caught. Remember there is usually a psychological evaluation with law enforcement jobs and the fact that you keep gettiing caught shows you are reckless. You need to get this matter rectified and grow up if you really wanna be a cop..
