No they don't. They receive somewhere in the neighborhood of 8 "block hours" in self defense training. Training in general is a way to legally absolve responsibility for the department or state. In no way will she have any working knowledge of self-defense after the "training". Its the way government works. Every pig on the beat thinks he's a trained marksman. LOL. Yes, you shot a few hundred rounds at the academy and you routinely "qualify", but the standards are so low a blind 2-fingered wombat could pass. Not to mention, your firearms instructor is probably some incompetent moron that the department can't fire, but doesn't want on the street.

In regards to your girl, she's probably safe. There's honor among thieves and whoever has the juice on the yard will probably protect her. As long as she isn't ragging constantly, she'll be safe as long as she keeps a professional relationship with the gang generals.

I'd be more worried about her banging one of them. Seriously. Its more common than you could ever imagine. Almost all inmates are perfect gentlemen to female CO's. They listen to their retarded problems and offer intelligent sounding tidbits of reinforcement. Its almost too easy. An educated con is every woman's fantasy.
