Do serial killers who claim they cannot control the urge still have that urge in jail?
Find answers to your legal question.

Do serial killers who claim they cannot control the urge still have that urge in jail?

My title is sorta self explanatory, I read and watch shows about serial killers and killers in general. I am always wondering why they do it. They say they enjoy and need the power, But I have not heard about what happens once they are in jail? Does the urge go away or are they able to control it? If so why didn't they do the same in life. Thanks

Hello Amber. The term for the type of personality you are referring to is called a sociopath. They do not care nor rarely consider the ramifications of their actions and are concerned only for the personal gratification they get or can plan.

This isn't just for "serial killers", which is moderately rare. If you look at the ratio of incarcerated men in maximum security prisons, you will find a small percentage that doing single, double or triple life sentences. (Jeffrey Dahmer was sentenced to 15 consecutive life sentences as an example). This type of person has absolutely nothing to lose. Worst case scenario is he commits another murder, gets another life sentence and is moved to a higher security grade prison that will restrict his movements more.

In most cases, these types are either tightly monitored or are given very strong medications to keep them on the mellow side. But in answer to your specific question, yes, the urges are still there. Incarceration does not change the mental mind set, it just limits there ability to act upon it.

I hope this helps and you can find it useful

Yes they do. I remember watching a documentary on sociopaths, they were speaking to one who has been in prison/mental institutes etc for his entire life.

The really funny thing was he was an extremely intelligent person and kept telling the doctors that if he has the chance he will kill again. Then following that comment he would behave extremely well, the doctors would see it as him starting to be rehabilitated so he wold be moved to less secure facilities. Within 2 days of being moved to less secure facilities he killed another inmate/patient.

This happened 6 times during his 50 year stint in prison/mental institutes. He finds it extremely funny and he told the camera he expects he will get to kill at least 1 more person before he dies of old age as he believes a doctor will believe in his rehabilitation.

Believe it or not, they are coming to realize that some psychos that are serial killers are actually addicted to the act of killing people. Wow. Now lawyers have a new loophole in the laws to protect their clients. Yikes!

Prisons are dangerous places. The really really crazy ones wind up in solitary or in mental hospitals, but there's still plenty of borderline psychos in general population. Also sometimes the mental hospital is full...

Don't drop the soap and watch your back.
