Do street cops in England carry guns like in the USA? I'm not talking about airport police, but regular street cops. I know about 12 yrs ago they didn't carry guns normally, but has that changed now?

Your average UK response officer / beat officer carries a baton, cuffs and CS gas / Parva.
However, each force within England and Wales have Firearms Departments, which operate to provide an adequate response to the criminal use of firearms. This is done by having patrolling ARV's (Armed Response Vehicles), available to respond to spontaneous incidents.
Armed officers also conduct pre-planned firearms operations to arrest individuals, following a risk assessment of the individual. Tactics used all depends on the nature of the risk.
At present the the numbers of firearms officers is adequate. Yes we hear of more shootings, however having more firearms officers on the streets will not negate this. The shootings will still occur. What we do need is robust sentencing to a) Take offenders off the streets for a long time and b) Send out the right message to all the other people who carry and use firearms.
All recent surveys by th Police Federation show that the vast majority of UK officers do not want to be armed.
Very rarelly do officers come face to face with armed criminals. We will all remember recent incidents where UK officers were shot and killed attending incidents. Having a firearm will not necessarily prevent this. On the occasions that I remember the officers were responding to incidents where no firearm was mentioned. On one occasion the officer was a fireams officer and was shot before he had time to react to the threat.
My personal opinion, is that response officers are armed with Taser. These are being trialled on non-firearms officers in a number of UK forces. The biggest threat to those officers is from edged weapons. Hopefully this will endeavour to give those officers the protection they need and the capability to deal with such subjects. |

In 1994 I read in US Popular Science magazine that most US cops are shot with their own guns. (My Dad got me the magazine on subscription.)
They said in the future they were looking for technology where a weapon could only be shot by the person it was issued to.
No.. normal standard cops don't carry guns out on patrol (except for airports and a few other places).
We have a trained expert firearm response team if necessary required - and I prefer this system we have. |

England use to be a safe country but street crime in London has exploded over the last 10 years in England thanks to massive third world immigration. This is not being racist it's a FACT! If they don't carry guns now they well have know choice in the future. |

No ,They do not carry guns. They are more effective without them. If they believe they need firepower they can summon it fairly quick. |

no, they are still unarmed. The only part of the UK that has armed beat police is Northern Ireland, and possibly Gibraltar |

No, ordinary police constables don't carry guns routinely, although the regional police forces do have Armed Response Units to be used in situations where armed officers are needed. |

Nope, they carry batons. And they are a lot quicker to beat the crap out of you than an American cop is, or so my cousin tells me. He got hit by London's finest when was on vacation........and extremely drunk..........he had it coming. |
