Do the police pay for petrol?

If a police car needs petrol, and they stop at a petrol station, do they pay, have a tab, or what?

At both places I worked, we had our own pumps and bought fuel from a distributor like any other place does. Just makes it more convenient and cheaper for the City/County/State. |

At my first department, we just ran a tab at a local gas station.
At my current department (much bigger) We have a gas station credit card in each car.
Which is frustrating and silly since the receipts don't list what is purchased, just the price. So at least once a week an officer is always called into the captains office about an "unexplained charge" and it always turns out the officer purchased oil, washing fluid, ect for the car and just forgot to note it.
The city has diesel pumps for the fire department. I think it would be cheaper in the long run to just add another pump and a bigger fuel tank. But whatever. |

The government pays for it. There are a set of pumps in our maintenance yard that we go to. You have to go through a locked gate and use a pass key with a code. |

My department takes bids from local stations, the low bid gets the contract for the year. Our current bid is at $.04 under the posted price. The bill is submitted and paid monthly.
Plus, federal and state fuel taxes are not included.
Some agencies have their own pumps, and purchase it wholesale. |

Nowadays they usually have their own pumps at major police stations,in smaller places they have contracts given by tender to a local garage if they have to gto long distance they pay and claim back cost or use an agency card.(UK) |

My agency has it's own gas pumps located in secured areas in my county. We use a gas key (card) and use office funds to buy gas. |

In effect the police do not actually pay for anything. I do. Who am I? I'm the tax payer and I pay part of my local council tax to the police service in my area who then spend it most carefully and try to remain in budget. They also capture lots of criminals etc. Doing a great job with far too much paper work. |

Yes the Police pay for petrol through their taxes like every other tax payer does.
Where I work, we have a fuel card account and use that when we fill up. This is paid for out of the budget which comes from the home office which is ultimately paid for out of the tax paid by the citizens (including the officers themselves of course). |

You pay it through taxes. |

Of course they do, but each Police force will be VAT registered so they can claim the VAT back. |

In most UK if not all UK forces we have fuel cards that can be used at almost all of the major petrol stations, it comes out of our budget that the government/council tax give us each year. |

You know, I would think they'd pay like everyone else, but I've never actually seen it happen. |

they always fill the car up at the police station before the start of a shift and if more petrol was needed go to another police station if they couldn't get to theirs. |

If they work the same way as the military, then they will have an agency card (account) which will cover fuel and oil only, and it will be paid by a central purse using tax payers money. |

No inevitably you and I do. |

They will pay for it either with an agency fuel card or they might have a pump especially for their own vehicles depending on location etc. |
