Do you feel cops are out of control?

I don't know what real world Alex r-t is referring to. He should remind his fellow officers about the oath they took to serve and protect.
Because the last officer I encountered asked me if I knew what his job description was. When I replied to serve and protect he said no! Then proceeded to inform me his job was to find any reason, any little reason at all to pull people over and find illegal activities and/or contraband.
This was after he tried to lie to me by saying the reason he to pulled me over was my vehicle had no license plate light.
I assured him it did. Again he said no maam they did not put lights on 1971 car plates.
He must have assumed I had no car savy or that I would believe his lie. He certainly did'nt think I'd get out and prove him wrong. It upset him when I did just that.
He then tried to further abuse his power by asking to search my car. I have never been in trouble with the law and am a law abiding citizen. This officer had absolutely no probable cause or tangible evidence to ask that of me. I exercised my 4th amendment right refusing consent.
This is one time he didn't get away with intimidation and abuse of power. I hear these kinds of stories more than not.
My father was a very well respected Chief of Police, Town Sheriff and later serving on a police commission. He was appalled by the officers we have today. It made him sad to see his profession change from serve and protect to steal and destroy. Legal organized crime is what he died believing of a once noble and honorable profession.

So yes to the question.

You ever tried to take control of an out of control subject? It is not even remotely as easy as they make it look in movies.

And if you remember that punk at UF wanted what he got. He was actively resisting. What other options should the police have tried? Maybe a few strikes with a billy club? A few punches and kicks? What would you like to see happen?

And the lady at the airport, the one that was nuts and on her way to rehab was handcuffed in a holding cell. What did the police do to her in your mind?

You have to get out and be on the street and see what actually goes on before you throw out blanket statements like you do.

No. Stop looking at you tube and only getting half of the information. The woman in the airport was suicidal about going to re hab in Tucson. She fought the police from the time she was approached by them. The only mistake they made was leaving her unattended. The tased student resisted arrest and got what he deserved.

LOL Gestapo tactics? Gees either that is supposed to be half humor, or you really have no idea of what the gestapo really did. First of all if the police were acting like the gestapo, you would be in jail and beaten just for posting this question!!

Also since nobody else knows what happened at the airport, it appears you do. So why don't you enlighten us with the conclusions you have assumed and jumped to?

no i think power can be abused in many different situations. i do not think power abuse can be limited to the police. i do know if i am scared i am going to go grab one of those policeman so that tells you something.

You know anyone that survived the Holocaust? Try asking one about Gestapo tactics because you obviously have no idea what they entail. I'm not very familiar with the airport incident. As far as the tazer incident at UF, are you kidding me? That kid deserved a shot to the common peroneal. He got lucky he was just drive stunned. I laughed at most of these answers because it shows how ignorant people are of what actually happens in the real world. Enjoy living in your cushy little bubble where everything is nice and easy and you have the opportunity to come online and bash guys and girls whose job it is to protect you.

Returning to the original question - I don't know why, probably because I'm white or I treat cops very respectfully, they are very friendly and helpful to me.

Unfortunately we have all been placed under new terrorism laws that do not restrict the way we are handled in the airport. Rules that govern speech as well as things we can carry have been changed due to the Executive branch of the government's rush for power, and according to law they are not out of control. Do I believe that things are blown out of proportion. Yes. Hell people are getting arrested for shirts they are wearing. Its all pretty asinine, but those of us 18 and older have only ourselves to blame for it. Maybe if people would stop and actually UNDERSTAND the situation before acting, we wouldn't have granny's being strip searched.

The issue goes both ways. People are trying to do more stupid things and think they should be able to get away with it. The tasings should therefore increase. Cops are becoming bullies (even more than they already were) and tasing people without just cause. The tasing should therefore decrease.

Perhaps cops should be tased at least once in training, so they know how it feels. They should be held accountable for their actions and punished severely for abuse of power. If we could trust in a system that kept our police force in check, we should also embrace the use of tasers to assist cops in their day to day duties.

I don't think the lady at the airport was being held by police (however your point is still valid, I do not believe she "just tangled herself up".) Regardless, yes, I think police mean to be threatening, and refuse to back down even when it requires it. I have never met a cop who was friendly while doing his job, and cops always make me feel fearful rather than safer. As for the boy tasered at the Kerry rally, he begged not to be tased several times while lying on the ground, and then was tased. I think that was unnecessary, and I hope there's a huge lawsuit so people will realize that tasers are potentially deadly weapons and not to be used lightly.
