Actually, eye for eye is not what you should do to the defaulter, but the maxium you can do to him.
In the law of the Lord, it is always very fair. If you read rape for example, rape carried out in city and village have different punishment. And there's a reason for it.
As for eye for eye, tooth for tooth is, if someone hurt you, the most you can do is to do the same, not more. Best is to forgive him.
Remember the city of refugee? It was set up all over the land, so that it can be reach by people who need a hiding place.
If I can quote, the Lev 19 is a way of holy living, which is duty to God, and duty to man. (I will not do into details).
Jesus has summerised the law into 2 commandment, love the Lord your God, and love your neighbour.
Paul had, in Rom 13 explain it clearly, if you love your friend, you will not do things to hurt them, things like steal, rape etc.
Mosic Law have many truth for us to learn. We need to see the underlining reason, if there is a principle to draw, if we can apply it wholesale, or we can use them as guideline.
We need wisdom from God, and we need to pray about it.

No I have never like that approach to crime. Even Biblical law ended that at Christ's death. Punishment should fit crime. We are so busy punishing white collar wealthy people that the serious armed robbery, rape & murder seem less important to court than Kenneth Lay. Take his business or fine him heavily - money talks with him or Martha Stewart. Do not waste jail space on someone who is not a danger to anyone. |

What goes round comes round as they say and I firmly believe in it too so eye for an eye or tooth for a tooth is probably true too but it has a funny way of working and sometimes the comes round can come back and haunt you or bless you when you least expect it!
My opinion
I know somebody who was racist-and what's so funny is this person is now going to be a grand parent to the same race that they were being racist about-thats a comes round and a half isn't it?
