If you become a corrections officer or go to the academy for a corrections officer, do you get your peace officers license? We reside in Texas.

No. Correctional officers in Texas are not peace officers.
Correctional officers are trained and certified by Texas Dept of Criminal Justice.
Police academy training is governed by TCLEOSE
(Texas Commission on Law Enforcement Officer Standards and Education)
Police academy training covers a lot that you never learn about in correctional training. You have to learn about arrest search and seizure, the constitution, penal code, transportation code, family code, field sobriety testing, family violence and patrol procedures, house clearing, civil process, and more.
The physical training is a lot more intense as well.
Once you pass the police academy you then have to pass the TCLEOSE exam in order to get peace officer certification.
Even after TCLEOSE certification, you still are not a licensed peace officer until you get commissioned and sworn in by a department.
As for TDCJ, the OIG investigators (Office of the Inspector General) are certified peace officers. They do the criminal investigations for TDCJ, and they are TCLEOSE certified peace officers who went through the police academy.
Article 2.12 of the Texas Code of Criminal Procedure defines who are peace officers under Texas Law. |

In general, the training for corrections officers is quite a bit different thatn the training for peace officers (ie, police, sheriff, state patrol, etc...). In most states, completion of the academy and being hired on does grant you peace officer powers - but for specific cases (in the case of correcetions).
