The question is very open ended and a great number of people that are far more famous and wiser then I have written countless books on it. So the following answer is very over simplified, but I think it gets the general idea.
Justice is what needs to be done in order to make things fair and equal. If someone hurts you in some way they need to pay a price for that harm.
A simple example is if a boy (or girl) hits a baseball through your window, they have to pay you to repair that window.
Another example is a murder kills you and has to "pay" by going to the gas chamber.
Mercy an act of forgiving a dept or part of a dept.
The boy (or girl) hits a baseball through your window and you tell them not to worry about it and pay for the replacement yourself.
The murder is given life in prison instead of death because the victim's family asked the jury to do so.
Personally, I go for a mix, but justice is over mercy. The reason is due mostly to my upbringing and personal choices. I've been taught to obey the law and be a moral person. I choose to continue obeying the laws and being a moral person. The people that are criminals and cheat undermine my way of life by taking short cuts. There needs to be some risk and eventual payment to taking short cuts, and that is where justice comes in.
Also I believe that:
A community based on justice can work as long as the system applies it equally, however, the community will not be pleasent to live in.
A community based on mercy only requires one person to take advantage of the system, before the system fails completely and the community falls apart.
That's why justice wins out for me, but both are needed. |

Police have no mercy. So the question is redundant. There is no such thing as justice.
Police should have to be in A one shape, instead of drinking booze, and eating donuts.
They live with double standards. Don't do as I do, do as I say.
I have NO respect for police and never will. A certain policeman in Corsicania Texas knows what I mean. I hope he is very proud of himself for making me call my husband, who died 10 days later from a massive heart attack. I warned him and he didn't care. Police and Good, should not be used in the same sentence. |

justice,on the other hand is there fair justice? in society today.
innocent people are victims everyday and the guilty gets away with murder. I don't care if your black, White, or Spanish, or confused, if we intelligently, fairly, and honestly, with a real reasonable doubt, convict the guilty. America will be safer, that's just my opinion. jjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjj... baby. |

Mercy is justice. Revenge is the way of the devil. A righteous person will pray for those who trespass against him. An eye for an eye will make the world blind. |

Justice. Certainly there are exceptions but if we just handed out mercy then the rest of us would be at the mercy of criminals everywhere. There must be accountability for ones actions or chaos will reign |

Not inclined to share the same views of your other commentors.
No mercy can be shown if there is no justice. In order for justice to prevail for all walks, mercy must be an essential part of it
.
Justice must be meted. Administered as the will of the people.
Mercy must be given by those who serve the same people as an act of consious of the people. Societies need justice, thrive on the nature of the lesson learned in public forums, television, newspapers. How efficient our society is.
Individuals need mercy. When the true price has been paid, what matter is the sentence, the punishment? What value can be derived from pain? Who determines this price? It is not the society. It must come from those who know what has been paid, what suffering actually costs.
Most criminals have learned their lessons in life way before they ever set foot in prison; these folks dont need mercy; they need prison. They need to be kept away from the rest of us. But they should not be treated with any less regard than they would treat each other. Let them tread lightly and ask for mercy.
But there are many who meet with society's justice who just made stupid mistakes. They did something that resulted in crime.
Are they criminals? Yes. They crossed that line. Should they be treated any different than real, hardened criminals? Yes, unless you want them to become real, hardened criminals.
If you have children, beat on one of them for being bad. See how long it takes for that child to beat on some one else. Teach them what they are doing right, show them the error of mistake, and you have mentally healthy children. Mercy- what a word.
Right now, the prison population in the US is over 2 million. 20 years ago, it was less than 300,000. Drugs, Truth in Sentencing, etc. have all made these increases. Is this justice? Is my society safer now than it was 20 years ago? I dont think so. 20 years ago, Federal Parole was still used; this was abandoned for the above truth in sentencing.
Most states have followed with thier own versions. The result? Prisons are at overflow capacity, one need only look up the stats in thier state or the BOP to see the growth in the last 6 months. The current administration is very clear on this subject.
Justice. Look up the Dept of Justice and see how much it costs for justice. even the Federal Parole Board, which really doesnt do anything now still gets over 112 million dollars a year.
Parole is clearly an issue of mercy that is no longer afforded in this society. Judges sentence people for crimes, some take up to 6 months to actually get a place in prison, staying in holding cells and even tent jails until then.
Mercy? send them to prison. If they continue to be criminal, keep them for life. But, if they do not, let them learn the mistakes of the past and turn them loose. With out this mercy, none of us can expect a fair shake when and if our time before the gavel comes. |
