There's good cops and bad cops, as with any profession. I personally respect law enforcement. They are much needed and perform a risky job. |

I tell it like it is

Every encounter I've had with the police they have always been positive. They do a great job and help serve and protect our communities. It's a stressful job as it is, and they do their job well! |

The only time you hear about the police is when it is something negative. They go out and risk their lives everyday. There are some bad apples out there but overall they are good people. It is a thankless job. |

I was on a ride-along with a department. There was a pretty intense bar fight which lead to about 10 officers at the scene.
All of a sudden, somebody around the corner shot at somebody 8(ish) times.
A hundred people ran away from the shots, 10 officers ran towards them.
Every day police go out there and thanklessly do some of the most frustrating work you can imagine...all to make your life better.
I'm a fan of the police. With the obvious exception of the idiots who abuse their power and give idiot cop-haters something to complain about. |

I have a million stories......I'm in some of them. Others are things I have seen in my 18 plus years on the job.
Here's one:
One night I got behind a VW bug at a red light. I noticed the tag was expired and called in a traffic stop on it. When the light turned green I turned on my blue lights and the car pulled over in a store parking lot. When I got to the back of the vehicle the driver rolled the window down and I swear I could smell the alcohol from the back of the car. When I got to the front window the driver looked up at me, his eyes were red and blood shot and his face was red. The first thing I said to him was "Sir have you been drinking tonight?" The first thing he said to me was "Sir, I'm drunk as S_____." I couldn't help laughing. I eventually arrested the guy and took him to jail. He blew something like a 0.18. He was a nice guy and I talked to him while processing him. He told me a friend of his called himm from a local bar and asked him for a ride. He said he was completely sober so volunteered to pick his friend up. Once he got to the bar his friend offered to buy him a drink to thank him. After that my prisoner said he bought his friend a drink to pay him back which was followed by his friend buying him a drink. That continued for a while until the guy drove his friend home. The guy was on his way home when I pulled him over and arrested him.
That was about sixteen years ago and I remember it like it was yesterday. I have no idea how many drunk drivers I have arrested since then but that is one of my favorites. He was some average Joe who did wrong and admitted it.
I obviously like the Police. Society as we know it would crumble without us. |

Yeah I have a police story: person was driving, off duty cop friend was in passenger seat, i was in the back. Person lost control (some kind of tire in the road she didn't see) and he totally handled that car like it was a part of him. . like magic. We would've hit a tiny fence and gone off into a river but for him and we all freaked. He was nice and calm.
He also happened to have saved 2 people from a burning building, he got 1st and 2nd degree burns in the process. Another thing he did was: there was a shootout and a civilian had been on a walk. He pulled the civilian down to cover and used his body to cover him, getting shot and shrapnel from a car in doing so. He is not anywhere on the internet, i googled his name and nothing came up.
That's a true hero. I feel that police are just as much heroes as military or firefighters but they get more crap and are hated. Nobody has a beef with firefighters and most people don't hate military.. but cops? Hated by the very people they protect. And yet they do their job still= hero. |

The funniest story around here about cops (Sandusky OH), was when they got caught stealing Girl Scout Cookies when I was in high school. (91 0r 92) They were supposed to be delivering them for the kids but instead decided it would be better to just steal them. Needless to say they really get upset over the term "Cookie Crooks".
As for truly horrible things they have been caught doing, in 06 we had a cop named Fitzpatrick, I believe, who was doing the mentor kids ride along thing. He was charged with raping a 15 or 16 year old little girl in the police station remote precinct. Of course being a responsible and respected member of the community he received a minimal sentence. |

Actually, I'll tell you how they feel about me: Police officers think I'm a criminal, a scumbag, a bad driver, and generally unable to contribute to society. And this is all in relation to a ticket for careless driving and a few contacts for road rage.
Oh, and anything I think I'm achieving in life doesn't matter. Police officers don't care if I think I'm "contributing to society" by having a steady job or anything like that. All they know is my record, and from that they can conclude I'm a scumbag.
Whatever I feel about the police is irrelevant. |
