Do you keep being stopped by police?
|
If you have a hobby like train or plane spotting, bird watching or any other unusual activity.
I take lots of photos recording local history changes of shops, buildings, statues, trees ect. People call the police as they do not know what I am doing. I am not breaking the law so what should I do to avoid problems. Informing the police beforehand is not practical as photos are taken when the opertunity arises and can not be planned ahead. One thing I do do is carry examples of my work to show any police officer. So far they have all been friendly but one day they may not be and I get arrested for no real reason.

As a retired police officer I can safely say that you'll never get arrested for "no real reason." As long as you are not trespassing on private property (and usually not even then if you leave when told to). It is a good job that people do call the police when they see people that they believe are acting in a suspicious manner. I congratulate you on your hobby. It gives me great pleasure to see old photographs of our city of long ago. Some day your photographs may be treasured. |

My boyfriend surveys flats for his job (he's an engineer) and he's been stopped before becuase he and his colleague couldn't get in to a certain block of flats so they were just wandering around the outside trying to get an idea of the flat typesshapes and the policemanwoman took their details and phoned their boss etc to check if they were bone fide or if they were criminals lol! :-) It is nice to know there are some police out there stopping suspicious looking people even if they do turn out to be innocent! :-) |

If you are going to photograph something, lets say a building. Find out who manages or owns the building and introduce yourself and let them know what you are doing and why you are doing it. I would especially make sure to make contact with someone if a government building or property is involved.
You could also stop into the police station of an area you frequently work at and ask what you could do to reduce any chances of confusion. |

Ever since 9/11/2001, it's been a very different world. Nowadays, everyone is on edge about something, oversensitive, excessively nosy and calls the police for every little thing. I don't think anything you do is "unusual" in any way. However, just keep examples of your hobbies around and learn to deal with the "realities" of the times. |

Well, so long as you've always got a proper reason for being there, even if you do run up against a copper who doesn't believe you, you still won't get in trouble once they work out you're legitimate.
And yep, I keep getting stopped by cops... but then I ride a motorbike so I'm clearly asking for it. Ah, I hear you say, but you were probably speeding. Well, occasionally, coz everyone does, whatever they say to the contrary, but I've never been stopped for speeding. I've been stopped on the off chance that I've done something unspecified. How do I know that? Well, if I'd been speeding, would my driving licence be completely clean? |

I used to work for a property management company. I always got bugged by the police when I was inspecting properties, especially when I had to enter units due to vandalism. All I could do was explain what I was doing there and they always left me alone. It is very unlikely that the police will do anything more than that.
Perhaps you should talk to the owners/occupants of the property when you wish to take a photo. |

Just keep doing what you're doing. Unless you are doing more than you claim, it is ridiculous that you could ever get arrested for no real reason. |

It's not against the law to be a photographer. We get calls like it all the time (we have to respond to them). I wouldn't worry about being arrested......just keep doing what you've been doing (explain what you're up to when the Police arrive).
The guys that deliver news papers probably get stopped more then any other person on the planet. |

Well you are not alone, all countries in the world have similar problems, as we are all changing into police states, using the threat of 'terrorism', to control us and merge us all into the one world order, they tried with force with the German Nazi regime, when that diden't work, they are now trying stealth. |

Quit doing it while you are behind the wheel! You probably complain about cell phone drivers but think your distracted driving is fine. You could also buy a car with a big sunroof so you don't have to keep hanging your head out the window. |
