Jail: A place of detention; a place where a person convicted or suspected of a crime is detained.
Prison: A place of long-term confinement for those convicted of serious crimes.
Difference
The most notable difference is that prison inmates have been tried and convicted of crimes, while those in jail may be awaiting trial. A prison is under the jurisdiction of either federal or state, while the jail holds people accused under federal, state, county and/or city laws. A jail holds inmates from two days to a year.
In the United States
Jails are most often run by sheriffs and/or local governments and are designed to hold individuals awaiting dispostion of their case, waiting for transport to the state prison system after they have been convicted, or they are serving time on a misdemenor sentence.
State Prisons are operated by the state where the person was convicted of a felony.
Federal Prisons are operated by the Federal Bureau of Prisons (BOP) and are designed to hold individuals convicted of federal crimes such as racketeering (RICO), bank robbery, and others.
Jails operate work release programs, boot camps, and other specialized services. They try to address educational needs, substance abuse needs, and vocational needs while managing inmate behavior. Inmate idleness contributes to management problems.
State prison systems operate halfway houses, work release centers and community restitution centers - all considered medium or minimum custody. Inmates assigned to such facilities are usually reaching the end of their sentences. |

Prision is for holding people who are convicted of felonies and have a sentence of a year or more
Where as a jail if for people convicted of midomeanors and are senteced to less than one year a jail also holds people upon their arrest and while they are awaiting trial
Contrary to what the 1st poster said most jails function at a level of security and rules of a Max to Super Max prision where medium security gives a inmate more freedom than your normal jail.
It all comes down to what they are convicted of and what their sentence is. you can not be sentenced to more than 1 year in jail at one time.
Wow amazing how many people just guess when answering like T-half you get sentenced to jail time too not just prision. Like I said under a year jail over a year prision. |

Jail like county is usually for people that are doing less than 1-2 years time or are waiting to get sent to Prison or awaiting trial. Prisons are ususally for someone serving a longer sentence. |

Over here jail is cells at the local lock-up.
Prisons are purpose build prisons.
There is a new prison near me (30 miles) outside a town called Milton.
It has been dubbed the Milton Hilton, because of the way it caters to the inmates. |

Jail is your local area where you live. Which is in the county you live in. And this is where you wait before you go to trail or if you crime was a really bad one you go here to serve your time. I think if it's less then 2-3 yrs or something like that. Prison is or can be in your local county or state but it's a much bigger place and this is where you serve major time for your crime. Like 4-5yrs. And prison are the end of the line after your sentence. That's pretty much where you will be unless you get moved for some reason. And then you have Federal jails which are also located across the country but they are said to be a little better then the regular prisons. This is when the Federal Government picks up the case against whomever and you can be sent anywhere in the U.S. when dealing with the FEDS. |

Some good answers but let me fix some misinformation. Jails can be holding facilities for those awaiting trail and also house inmates convictied and serving less than one year. There are people with felony convictions serving thier time in county jails(in my state a second offence DUI is a felony and has a minimum sentence of 3 months. There are many inmates convicted of felony DUI and serving time in the county jail. Yes you can serve felony time in a county jail.
In prison you do have to be sentenced. Inmates are here for sentences of 1 year or more. In general county jails tend to be safer but more boring. Prisons tend to offer more to do but have less supervision so it can be more dangerous. Also, corrections officers are much more stict in county jails and it's a safer place. In prison, there is a lot less supervision and when something does happen corrections officers are more likey to let inmates handle the situations themselves. |

When you first get arrested, you go to jail to wait for a hearing (or trial).
After you are found guilty of a felony and sentenced, you go to Prison.
Once you're on parole and you mess up, you'll briefly go to jail until Prison Transport comes, picks you up and takes you back to Prison. |
