Yes, many violent crimes are committed by people with the capacity to be rehabilitated. A friend of mine once got drunk and punched someone, life in prison is not a fitting punishment for a bar fight. |

Truth Hurts
 |
Depends on what violent crime they were convicted of. |
|

Another Perspective
|
First reason, there are innocent people that are convicted, sorry, this is a fact. Our legal system isn't as blind and fair as we want it to be.
Second reason, the purpose of prison is to rehabilitate and punish. You have to let it do its job by giving them another chance. Well, at least for a certain subset of crimes. |

I think, in the US, if we were harder on criminals the crime rate would dramatically decrease. Look at the countries where caning and chopping off hands for stealing is the norm. They're onto something! |

once they have served their time they should be released. |

Sure...
Because the punishment must fit the crime and not be too excessive, otherwise it itself becomes an injustice, which ought to be remedied...

Ther are people convicted of violent crimes that don't deserve mercy but not every body in prison is a hard core criminal.
How about the father that saw a drunk driver run over his child? He pulls the man out of his car and hits him several times. The drunk gets convicted and sent to prison but so did the father for assualt. does he deserve to be locked away forever?
Should there mercy? Yes. Should it be unilateral? Can't be.
Way to many stories like this out there to just say "Yes kill them all". If you look there will be alot of stories like this. |

Yes.
Each and every case and individual is different, and the details of their cases are unique. To say all of them deserve life sentences, is an affront to the justice system itself. |

As far as releasing a criminal after committing a violent crime, we could just execute them perhaps? |

Great question...no really. Whoever thought of this amazing, in-depth question should look for a job in high level broadcasting/journalism. You know, someplace like The View, or The NY Times. I mean, what a great question! At least it isn't toooooo specific. Its not like punching someone's lights out is any different than being convicted of murder. |
