Do you think it is dangerous to have a glock 22 in your house?
Find answers to your legal question.

Do you think it is dangerous to have a glock 22 in your house?

My boyfriend moved in. He used to be a police officer and is trained to use guns safely but I still worry that if anyone else knew it was here , guests or even someone who would break in and steel it? My house isn't that hard to get into and I can't afford to go out and buy a security system or a gun case.

Statistically, yes, though obviously less dangerous with someone trained as a police officer.

I felt like having one in the house after someone broke in, but I think I'm getting over it.

It's no more dangerous than having a kitchen knife, in my opinion at least.

No. It should be nobody's business what is in your house and hopefully you will not be sharing this information with the public like you are here.

There is nothing dangerous about the weapon being in your home. What is dangerous is who has access to the weapon.

Keep the weapon in a safe and secure manner and you will do fine!

I would feel safer with a gun in my house. Ask him to teach you how to shoot. In any case in an emergency you will be able to defend yourself.

As a former weapons instructor and Police Officer, who still has weapons in my home. I can tell you all firearms and weapons are dangerous to have around the house. That said, it is easy to make a handgun safe at a low cost. Simply remove the Glocks magazine. make sure theres no round in the chamber ( have your boyfriend do this )Then place a small padlock behind the trigger, so the weapon could not be fired.
Cost about $3.00, It will not harm the weapon and will make it safe. I would use a key lock and keep the keys safely put away. Your boyfriend should and Im sure already knows all this.

Logic
If its properly kept in a safe of some sort, there shouldn't be a problem.I think he knows best since he is a former officer also.

as long as the gun is kept unloaded in a safe (preferably one that is attached to the structure), and your boyfriend knows how to use/maintain it in a safe manner, than it should be okay. if you are worried though, talk to your boyfriend about it and tell him your concerns. it is your place too, and if you don't want a firearm in the house, you have a right to not have it there. if you do have it there, be safe, vigilant, and don't advertise/brag about the fact that he has it there.

It depends on a lot of things. Get a safe or lock box to put it in if it concerns you. Small safes cost between $50 and $100. As long as the gun is put away I don't see a problem.

House security is important as well. If you don't have deadbolts, get some put in, relatively cheap. Use the deadbolts. When away from the house make sure the windows are locked. Don't make it easier than it needs to be for a thief.

No, you should feel safer if its in your house, because its an added insurance against an intruder. A cable lock for a gun is cheap (like $5-$10) That will keep it from being used by anyone but you or your boyfriend. Also, all glocks come with a hard storage case when you buy them. (I own a glock 22C) and you can put a padlock on the case. I would recommend that your boyfriend take you to a range and teaches you how to shoot. Keep it somewhere safe (under the bed, in a night stand, etc) so only you and your boyfriend know where it is at. You should have no problems.

I wouldn't worry. Glocks have several safety mechanisms to reduce the risk of accidental discharge. Though you have to do your part and learn how to use it and follow these 4 rules always:
-Always handle the gun as if it's loaded until you check it for yourself to see that it's not (don't just take someone else's word for it).
-Keep your finger off the trigger until your sights are on the target.
-Never point the gun at anything you're not willing to destroy.
-Know what your target is, as well as what's beyond and around your target.

Follow those rules always and you should have 0 problems.

As far as others go, I don't see any reason why anyone has to know you have it. As for the possibility of a burglar stealing it, that's easy - get a concealed carry permit and carry it. Then it won't be there to steal. Or you could get something like: http://www.amazon.com/Octagon-Gun-Clock-Dark-Oak/dp/B000FZO204

Some people talk about a study showing it's bad to keep guns, but that study is so seriously flawed that it should be taken no more seriously than an urban legend.

You have no kids.... so that is not an issue.

Let me preface this by saying that I am military, carry a sidearm and have other weapons that I am authorized to have. Most I have locked up but I still keep my sidearm about. In deference to my wife I hang it behind my closet door so she does not need to look at it.

But all in all it is all pretty standard business and many wives and girlfreinds have that uncomfortable feeling when weapons are about.

They are just tools. As another said a kitchen knife would do the same job.

Your boyfreind was a police officer. He knows where his weapon is at all times. Who else needs to know? If you have guests nothing needs to be said. Who needs to go into your bedroom or whatnot?

How would someone breaking in know how to find a weapon? Are they going to find it in the middle of the night, grab it and shoot you? Your boyfreind moved in so he will know where it is at all times. And know the limitations of someone even if they did find it and try to use it.

You really should ask him to take you to a range. You would realize what is up after that. Guns are tools and not inherinty evil. Relate it to pioneers and such that usually always had a firearm about.

I love dell
That depends a LOT! I would trust your dude!

You can buy a trigger lock for little money. Buy one, put it on when no one is home, feel safer that some slime-ball won't steal it and use it for bad purposes.

Jelmer*-
it is save.
just put it in ur sleeping room and dont let anyone get there...
so if someone breaks in your friend can shoot him in his legg if needable
remember! your friend whas a cop and is trained with guns... so dont be scared ;)

In the right hands, a gun is no more dangerous than a hammer. Or a sharp knife. Or a pair of scissors. Or a screwdriver. All of these can be used as a weapon, should the person intend harm to someone else. You are being just a little paranoid about the gun. And why on earth would you publicize this here, where millions of people hang around, and then worry that "if anyone else knew it was there, they would break in and steal (not steel) it." No one's home is hard to get into. Unless you have small children, it's no more dangerous than any other tool, which is what it is.

You obviously don't know how to use the gun and it's frightening to you. Why aren't you telling the boyfriend how you feel instead of this group of strange people? Your reassurance should come from him, not us.

Can you afford to replace stolen items? Or afford to get a gun case? I just hope you don't have children who are coming over who can gain access to the gun because then you are both in trouble.
