Yes!, I'd rather live in a police state than be governed by a half hearted police force like at present, to many civilians getting hurt, killed etc.
Our government should also bring the UK in line with the 21st Century, too many innocent people being murdered, Why? because the killer or Killer's know all to well if they are caught all they get is a prison sentence, they do not suffer physically, Bring back Hanging preferable Public hanging it'll could have a 110%b effect overnight, and the sick individual who is out there in civvy street about to kill someone will think twice....
Basically British Politics and our Police laws are too soft "Change Em!" |

No, it will spiral into a US type gun culture all too quickly.
In the UK the number of gun-related deaths per year is around 30. In the US is 12,000-15,000. |

arming our police, in certain cases is fine but not all of them all of the time. their have been a few mistakes and a few is to many, i think that the sentences for carrying guns should be so hard that is as good as a shot in the right place |

Thanks but no thanks.
The system makes such a big deal of it when armed officers do fire a shot (suspensions, inquests, internal investigations having a field day, media hyperbole) it simply isn't worth it from a personal point of view to put every officer in that situation on a routine basis. If the system treated firing a shot as unfortunate but occaisionally necessary part of policing, perhaps as in the USA by not approaching it from the automatic view point that the officer did something wrong and then make life hell for the officer who considered in necesary I might change my mind.
It's just not worth it and I don't believe we have reached the point where all officers need arming anyway, don't let the media hype fool you. |

As a serving police officer, I would say no. I wouldn't want the responsibility of carrying a loaded firearm. Once it has been fired you can't call the bullet back and justified or not, I personally wouldn't want the responsibility.
There are specialised firearms officers, who have the training, the expertise and the desire to carry a gun. I certainly don't want to.
If we start routinely arming police officers, without the specialised training that firearms officers get, it would be a recipe for disaster. The thin blue line is already stretched to breaking point as it is, with the enquiries and witch hunting that already goes on when qualified firearms officers discharge their weapon, if the rest of us were subjected to the same there would never be any officers to deal with the existing crap. |

I do think that this is a better idea than no weapons at all. However, guns seem a bit too lethal. I think that some sort of stun gun would be a better idea to be carried by all officers. Non-lethal weapons, but weapons that will give the criminals a nasty shock! |

i am a officer in the US and (thank god) I've never fired a shot at another human being. but i am sure glad i have it, just in case i need it. I would imangine if the situation in UK gets too dangerous then they will allow them to carry.
but carrying a duty weapon escalates any situation. because now, in EVERY SINGLE situation, there is at least one gun involved. yours. |

i say a BIG BRITISH YES, but it may also cause more people to get themselves sufficiently armed as well. it could cause more hassle unfortunately. but something should be done. |

i live in Luton. i saw the carnage left by the maniac who murdered PC Johnathan Henry.
Johnathan was wearing a stab vest and yet he still died!!
Yes in my opinion, they do need to be armed. he was coming to the rescue of a window cleaner and other members of the public. this cost him is life, his wife terrible grief and a baby daughter who will grow up with only photo's as a reminder of her brave daddy!!
everyone goes on slating the police....i for one think they do a good job. in the past when I've needed them they've always be polite, professional and have helped me and others.
they need protecting!!!!!! |

Good idea - then the bad guys could get even bigger guns. Next thing you know we'll all be getting speeding tickets at gunpoint. |

No. It fails to work in America and other places where the Police routinely carry guns. People would not enlist in wars ,armies and the like if being shot and killed was a deterrent. I support armed response teams and other specialise units but more important stronger sentencing and in some cases the death penalty. |

The anti gun Brits are not thinking right. A police officer without a sidearm is like a toothless guard dog. |

I don't think at this present time that all officers should be armed. Yes there has been a lot of press reporting regarding gun crime, and it has become more prevelant, however countering that with armed officers is not the solution. Gun crime in this country is nowhere near what it is in the USA. We do not need to arm all our officers.
Also a recent survey by the Police Federation revealed that a vast majority of unarmed officers would not wish to be armed.
It can be noted that in recent years a number of police officers have lost their lives in the line of duty. Would possession of firearms by these officers have prevented their deaths? This is debatable, however one colleague was a firearms officer and carrying a firearm. Sometimes incidents where you least expect a threat can be the most dangerous.
At present the biggest threat to police officers is from persons in possession of edged weapons. To combat this and to give officers more distance and more protection I am in favour of all officers being issued Taser. This will inevitably happen in the future. |

No. I'm a british police officer and wouldn't carry a gun if asked to do so. We have a tradition of policing by consent which I am proud to uphold.
Very few murders would have been prevented by arming the police but I fear that criminals would shoot first if they knew that we were armed.
Violence breeds violence. No guns for us thank you! |

In a way I have to disagree with some of the answers. The Police Service in Northern Ireland are routinely armed. Obviously, this was down to the Terrorism and problems between factions, but hasn't that ceased? (erm, no!)
I think the answer lies, not having our police armed, but having them on the streets. The government have given us PCSO's (referred to as Pretend Copper, Silly Outfit by one police officer locally) which in principle is a good idea, but again, they have limited powers. They are patrolling while the police officer is caught up in red tape, paperwork etc.
Let the PCSO do the paperwork and let the Police Officer do the patrolling. |

A fairly complex question, as i am already a police officer i can say that the constent question to arm all police officers can swing in two directions! For example by arming police officers it may increase public saftey or take, America. Arming theier officers lead to an increase in criminal firearms. In england we have low gun crime but a higher increase in weapons like knifes and others blades. This isnt great but by introducing guns criminals will do the same and the risk to the police and public would be far worse than just keeping firearms out of streets |

Totally! About time and all. All these ruffians/ hooligans think they run the place. Arming time i say! That'll make these no-gooders think twice! |

What...and shoot the wrong guy before telling us all he 'looked hostile', and the darker/younger he is, the more chance the 'Dirty Harry' of Handsworth gets off, with 5 years holiday with sick pay.
Read a book about gangs in Manchester not too long ago, and if police are armed, it'll give all the more reason for the crims. to arm themselves - and more worse, to use it on anybody...if Manchester is anything to go by. |

i do, i have been victim to a theft once or twice and i think that theives would think twice before threatening when a shot cud be fired at them. hey it works in many other countries |

not yet,the reason i say this is because we dont know if they are our police force or europes occupying forces, britain is becoming more nazified, since being compeled to be in europe against our will, if one acts like a free englishmen and denies europe, one can be arrested for not submiting to our captors that makes the police a foreign army. so i dont think they should be armed,if the politician thinks his e.u. gravy train is under threat they will turn the guns on their own people
thats why we never get a vote on europe. |

No, i think theyd end up shooting people who they thought posed a threat but really they didnt.. But at the time it seemed that way. And loads of people would end up dying for nothing. |
