I would guess that TV has a sedating effect on prisoners as it does on the rest of the population.
Take away TV and you have to add more guards. TV is cheaper. |

No way - murderers and rapists should come out thinking Bonanza is still being made.
They're in jail, not a hotel. |

I think watching TV should be allowed but only to prisoners who have a good record of cooperation, and access to the TV should be used as a reward for good behavior. I don't think TV should be a "right". |

No. They should not be allowed to lift weights either. The only thing available to them should be a library.
I dont see what type of reforming you can do if your brain is trapped in the glowing box all day.
What about when they WATCH ON TV actions and lifestyles they are in prison for, being justifiedand glorified in music videos, movies, and tv shows! |

They shouldn't have the free time. They should be busy working in the enclosed economy of the prison so that it doesn't cost taxpayers anything to keep them in prison.
Watching TV, much of which glorifies violence, is probably how a lot of them got into prison to begin with. |

no, they're in jail! Why should they get the same priviledges we do? |

no i dont think they should they have been punished for a crime they have commited.there not on a holiday they live it up more than some people on the outside do. |

Yes...
But only reruns of Dancing With The Stars...
Let's "really" punish them... |

In Arizona, in one of the prisons, I heard that the only channels the prisoners can watch is the Disney Channel and the Weather Channel. Because the prisoners should know how hot it's going to be when they work in the fields. |

Only educational television programs. Why should they get to see movies and cable when many non-criminals don't have that luxury. |

I guess it's better than weight lifting non stop! |

No they are there for a reason. They are there to be punished for breaking the law and not to enjoy themselves!! |

Yes, if you don't GIVE prisoners something to do they will FIND something to do, more often than not it's violent and illegal by jail standards and involves activities far worse than watching TV.
Besides, have you seen what's on TV??? Most of it IS punishment.
They DEFINITELY should not be allowed to lift weights so that they can become these animals that can snap your neck with two fingers.
The degree of civilization in a society can be judged by entering its prison. - Dostoyevsky |

Don't think so... Prison should be a punishment, not an entertainment center...
Besides, many programs show violence as a "cool" thing, and that's the last thing they should think. |

My brother is a police officer in miami, my other brother is a correctional officer with TDC. The current prison system is designed to rehabilatate prisoners so that they can return to society as a functioning and contributing citizen. In my opinion It angers me that I pay for them to have access to cable when we have none, but without tv there is no contact with the outside. If we intend to return these people to our society after years of confinement, It makes it easier if they understand how the world they ar being sent too has changed. Our prisons are overcrowded as it is. We really need to do what we can to make sure these people learn from their mistakes so we dont have to keep paying for their incarceration because they go back. If we really intend our system to be one of rehabilitation instead of one of punishment then tv is a necessity. A lot can change in 5, 10, 20 years. |

yes. would you rather let them go crazy with nothing to do, and then when they let them out there even more of a threat to society? they cant work out all day and some people dont like to read |

To answer for those who work in the corrections field.
We use TV as an activity and a privilege. It prevents more incidents in corrections than any weapon or threat the staff has.
To those who believe that everything should be taken away from inmates, we would be turning out a much more violent population if all they did was sit or lay in their beds and think. |

No. They aren't in there for recreational purposes. It's not supposed to be like they were sent to their rooms or something. |

Prisoners should be encouraged to be as productive as possible doing things such as:
- earning a living
- paying reparations
- learning a skill
However, TV in limited amounts and for limited shows seems like a reasonable break time activity for those exhibiting good behavior. In other words, people should be productive most of the time with periodic break times for rest and relaxation.
I feel the same way about my children. :-) |

Hell, no. Television is a luxury and should not be allowed except in cases where the prisoner is actually showing steady intent at improving their demeanor. |

Well yea... You expect them to just sit in there little sell, be fed bread and water, and have no idea whats going on in the outside world... |

Jails, county or city, operate on a limited budget. They have to feed and clothe the inmates in their charge, as well as providing for basic medical care.
While I wouldn't oppose people in jail being allowed to watch TV, I would oppose making it a right. Jails are usually divided into different cell blocks. To purchase television sets for each would be prohibitively expensive for many jurisdictions, not to mention the cost of purchasing cable.
I say, let them read, or learn how to do so. |

Give 'em that TV and take their weight training away. All that we need is criminals made muscular at taxpayers' expense. |

The law is a form of tyranny.

No, they should have nothing else to do but think "I'm gonna kill some f'ing guards."
TV, like alcohol and many drugs, is a sedative. |

I think tv is fine, but I don't think they should have cable..... just the regular 3 or 4 channels that come in fuzzy should be good enough. Why should the public have a cable bill for the criminals? |

i think they should be allowed to watch TV but it should
depend on how long their staying in jail. there should be a
different time for watching TV like theres time to eat food or
work out or play sport; there should be a time to watch TV but
the people who stay in jail the longest, should watch TV the most. |
