Indeed, I see this every now and then. Some of thse "fine" officers are just itching to exert and exercise their authority over anyone they see.

I think power not only corrupts, but attracts the corruptible.

Though, it's a stupid question. The question presumes to ask the answerer something that could only be empirically observed by knowing every police officer in the world.

Funny how ALL the "cops" say no. Everone I know that has gone into law enforcement has gotten power hungry( which is more than a dozen people I know). I have seen them change. I understand on the job, but leave it there. I do.

No. I think the police are underpaid, under-appreciated, overworked, and not receiving the gratitude they deserve for doing a thankless job for a mostly indifferent public.

I cannot imagine for a moment that my life would be better with **less** police around.

I don't think we are power hungry. I am almost thinking that your father is the type that doesn't like the police so we wasn't going to cooperate with them at all. That is why he was treated the way he was treated.

In a civilized society, laws are created to maintain order and to insure the rights of the citizens. Laws must be upheld, and there have to be officers who enforce the laws, so that you and I can go about our lives everyday, without having someone violate our rights.

Police work is not a power-trip job, nor is it easy. There are always people who think badly of them, no matter how much good they do.

Think about it. Every day, an officer puts on his/her uniform, and goes out into the world to protect you and your rights. They meet the absolute worst in society- druggies, child molesters, thieves and murderers. They come across situations that would turn your stomach or haunt you all the days of your life. They put their lives on the line, so that you and I are safe in our homes, offices, schools.

They are just there to do their job. To keep order, enforce the law, and protect us all- even those who are "mad at them".

It is unfortunate that your father had a bad experience. If he (and you) look at the big picture, you will see that mistaken identity can happen. It got straightened out, didn't it?

In time your father's opinion (and yours) may become more realistic.
