Keep in mind laws are written by lawyers who also make up 95% at least of any governing body. Lawyers will always throw an angle to make money but revenues are also directed towards the actual law itself. It costs a ton of money to draft a new law and usually takes a few years. In Texas we still have a law on the books that says you cannot leave a horse tied up in front of a saloon overnight. Not all make sense........So to answer your question Yes, and No. |

there are many laws, in general, they serve purpose to creating order and decent living society..
however, there are laws passed trough by corporation lobbyies which alllov companies to have much greater right then individuals. For example, companies can start court action against other governments.. and win! these are dangerous.
laws which are designed to make money are taxes. the question realy should be asked, if these money are being spent well.
what you describe as silly law, makes perfect sense, if someone wants to smoke, fine, but why should he poison air of others. and yes, he is causing others ill by them inhaling his smoke. |

some are yes...
but the seatbelt law was put into effect because the problem was so bad so that it was costing the tax payer an arm and a leg.
smoking ban is a liability issue.. that law was imposed to save tax payer dollars and costs. |

Yes. visit copwatch.org you can read about all of the terrorist activity law enforcement inflict on the American population.
Lots of law agency use speeding ticket to complety fund them. The study traffic flow to determine if another patorl car could be funded with traffic citation. They try to expand city limits to include major roads to increase traffic tickets on travelers. |

Making money is the driving force behind most laws. |

Yes, but not all laws are constitutional. When someone finally gets mad enough to sue over the sidewalk shoveling, then change can occur. It sounds like you are really more interested in private property rights by the tone of your question. Organizations like the Institute for Justice (ij.org) sue governments over issues like that. Check them out. |

Laws are created in response to perceived problems.
Seatbelt laws were created to cut down on the death and injury rates from automobile accidents. Smoking bans were created to protect the people who do not want to breathe secondhand smoke. And I would expect that the sidewalk sweeping requirement was ment to keep the sidewalks clear so people would not have to walk in the street. |

the people who create those laws are elected by people who vote. i think they vote for what the constiutents want. states are made up of nothing but people; who live there, work there, etc.
just think about how laws are made; you elect the folks that vote them in. if people don't like the laws they can elect different lawmakers. |

Of course... MOST laws are created to generate revenue. Why else do you think you need a LICENSE to be a hairdresser? |

Yes I do think that some laws are made just to make money, especially tax laws...
The goverment has gotten greedy, somtimes I wish the laws were more like they were during the early years of the country. |

It is not just a revenue raising exercise.
The seatbelt law was legislated to make people safer in their own cars.
The sidewalk law is to prevent people from falling and injuring themselves. The government can be sued for compensation and would probably pass that on to you.
You can smoke outside; the government can and has been sued for compensation for people becoming ill from passive smoking. |

Lots and lots of them. In Mexico there are some taxes meant to pay for things that have been paid for for decades. But, it is far better to keep on collecting the money rather than cancel that law. |

Most laws are made for making money. I resent being forced to have insurance on my car and I cannot afford insurance for myself. I ignore all cigarette bans, they can stop selling them. They make much money off cigarettes so that is not going to happen. |
